Symmetrical alignment[edit]
I'm thinking about adding a population pyramid to some of the demographics sections I add to articles on New Zealand localities. I was wondering if there was a reason the male bars are left-aligned in this template, while the examples of population pyramids I find elsewhere on the new usually right-align the male and left-align the famale bars to produce a symmetrical effect.
I had a go at producing a symmetrical version of this; you can see the code at User:Gadfium/Population pyramid, and an example of it in use at User:Gadfium/sandbox. I appreciate the layout of the article overall in my sandbox is not optimal, but I am only looking at the pyramid at this point.
Is my version an improvement on the original? Is there a better way to do what I've done, or improvements in the overall appearance which could be made? Can the differences be included in the original as an optional parameter e.g. "|symmetry=yes", or would that complicate the template too much and I should produce a {{Symmetrical population pyramid}} instead?
