Terry Vaughn (referee)
Terry Vaughn (born 1 April 1973) is a formerAmerican football referee who currently resides in Mount Vernon, Iowa. He has been a full international referee for FIFA since 2004.[1]
He was selected as a referee for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, where he refereed two matches, Jordan versus Zambia, and Scotland versus Nigeria.[2]
[edit] Controversy
Many feel that Terry Vaughn is error prone and favors certain teams. There was controversy over a 2011 DC United vs Colorado Rapids match [3] in addition to "phantom fouls" called on Seattle by Vaughn during the Seattle Sounders vs Chicago Fire match on June 4, 2011.[4][5] The controversy over the recent Chicago Fire game is not news to Sounders fans, who loudly complained about a Vaughn decision back in April 2010, wherein FC Dallas was essentially given a tie by Vaughn.[6]
The controversy continued when on June 18, 2011, Vaughn awarded a penalty kick to DC United late in the game. The penalty kick was an extremely controversial call and the subsequent penalty kick gave DC United a tie against Real Salt Lake late in the game. Video reviews of the call show Vaughn was out of place to have a good view of what happened, and that DC United's Charlie Davies was not fouled in the box (Davies later admitted that he was not fouled).[7][8]
Later that season, on September 10, 2011, Vaughn ejected Jan Gunnar Solli of the New York Red Bulls in first half injury time. In its official weekly guidance for officials published the following week, US Soccer reported that Vaughn erred in ejecting Solli, explaining that Solli should have instead been cautioned.[9]
During the 2011 MLS season he was not selected to work the playoffs. On December 13, 2011 the Washington Post reported Terry Vaughn had been fired from his full time referee position with US Soccer due to sub par performances.
