Timothy Freke (born 1959) is a spiritual teacher and 'standup philosopher' from the UK. He is the author of more than 30 books, translated into 15 languages.

Freke became well known for The Jesus Mysteries (co-authored with Peter Gandy), which was a Sunday Times bestseller, a Daily Telegraph 'Book of the Year' in 1999 and 'a surprise bestseller' on Amazon.com,[1] where it went to number 6. He had previously authored many books on the spiritual traditions of the world. Since 2001 he has gone on to articulate his unique approach to spiritual awakening in Lucid Living, How Long Is Now? and The Mystery Experience.

Freke grew up in the southwest of England, where he reports having experienced a spontaneous awakening at the age of 12.[2] This motivated him to explore and experiment with ways to transform consciousness, as well as studying the philosophy and practises of the world's spiritual traditions. He has a BA honours degree in philosophy from Bristol university. He lives with his wife and children in Glastonbury, UK.

Standup philosopher[edit]

Freke calls himself a standup philosopher and aims to present deep ideas as 'serious fun'. He sees himself as reinvigorating the ancient tradition in which philosophers were intellectual entertainers who opened people's minds to new ways of experiencing the world.

Freke is a passionate and playful communicator who has performed around the world, including in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Croatia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, South Africa and the United Kingdom, speaking at large business conferences, small elite CEO groups, business schools, scientific conferences, spiritual gatherings, music festivals, universities and inspirational groups.

The mystery experience[edit]

Looking Into the Mystery

Freke's latest book is The Mystery Experience in which he articulates a paralogical approach to spiritual awakening, which he claims is 'free from superficial woo-woo and sits alongside deep science to inform human understanding'. He runs Mystery Experience Retreats[3] throughout the world in which he guides people directly to an experience of oneness and 'big love', which calls the 'WOW!'

Freke worked with director Nick Ralph to create a short film The Mystery Experience exploring the experience of spiritual awakening.

He worked with Rupert Truman of Storm Studios to create an image to express the experience of looking through the appearances of life and seeing the 'deep mystery'.
