Computer Systems Technology is a major offered at Illinois State University (ISU). Computer Systems Technology prepares students with technological knowledge, communication, and the skills to work with other professionals in the same industry. Within a growing industry this major seems to have a very prosperous outcome. With a Computer Systems Technology degree you are eligible for a wide variety of careers ranging from network management to web development.[1]

Facilities and Equipment[edit]

Media Labs[edit]

The labs offers both Windows and Linux OS servers installed on them. Students are allowed to use the provided domain and shared folder to access programs and resources to help them further their education. Other useful resources like printers, plotters, and scanners are also available. These media labs help prepare students with real life situations in a controlled environment.[2]

Computer Networking[edit]

The computer networking allows students to become familiar with taking apart and assembling computers and networks. This facility also allows students to modify, observe, and even build electronics. These skills will help students when certain employers require pre-experience when applying to jobs.[3]

Software[edit]

Computer Systems Technology students have a selection of software applications to use from when furthering their education in this major. Some of the major softwares that are available to these students include CAD, C++, and Java.[4]

Turner Hall[edit]

Turner Hall, opened in 1963, is known for the central hub for everything related for technology. Turner Hall was named after Jonathan Baldwin Turner, he lead agriculture and industrial technology programs at Illinois State University. Turner Hall also has a Child Care Center for students with two to ten year old children. The building is located next to the Redbird Arena.[5]

In the year 2013 the starting salary was surveyed for between $45,000 to $65,000.[6]

IEEE is a non-profit technical association that helps Computer Systems Technology students have the opportunity to work with other students in the same major, build connections, go to educational field trips, and be a part in competitions. IEEE is very beneficial for getting more active within the major and could help dramatically with getting an internship and connections.[9]
