The Index is the weekly student newspaper of Kalamazoo College. First published as a quarterly literary journal, The Index established itself as a weekly newspaper in 1916.[1] The paper's office is located in the Weimer K. Hicks Center on the Kalamazoo College campus. Its circulation numbers 500 copies distributed throughout campus.
The Index is published weekly in broadsheet format during the college's Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. The paper focuses primarily on ultra-local campus news, printing pieces discussing a range of topics relevant to the student body. At the end of each quarter the paper publishes a satirical "Buzzkill" issue in which the paper's staff writers lampoon fellow student organizations and the college administration.

The Index first established itself in November 1877 as The College Index, a quarterly publication serving as a physical index for Kalamazoo College. These early issues contained a faculty directory and a selection of student works from throughout the quarter, including short fiction and poetry.
Beginning with the No. 1 issue published on September 27, 1916, The College Index assumed a traditional weekly newspaper format under a new masthead as The Kalamazoo College Index.
In 1971 the paper's name changed again, becoming simply The Index. From 1971 to 1973, the paper again functioned as a literary magazine, swapping the front page for a cover page adorned with student illustrations.[2] By 1974, however, the paper was again a fully news-oriented publication.
