Inspiration[edit]
Clifford was originally one of the drawings that Bridwell showed publishing houses to try to find someone that would hire him to illustrate a book. An editor at Harper & Row told Bridwell that his art was not good enough for anyone to hire him as an illustrator, but that she saw a story in the drawing of a big red dog and a baby girl.[1]
