Scapulopexy is a form of scapular fixation, an orthopedic surgery in which the range of motion of the scapula is reduced or eliminated. It most commonly refers to fixation of the scapula to the ribs, which is essentially scapulothoracic fusion without fusion of bones (arthrodesis).[1] It also refers to various other procedures, such as using a soft tissue "checkrein" to tether the scapula to vertebrae or to the other scapula.[2]
Scapulopexy is generally considered more conservative than scapulothoracic fusion because no bones are fused and it is more easily reversed.[1] However, it is less robust, as the soft tissue, wire, and other materials are more susceptible to long-term failure compared to bone-to-bone fusion.
Scapulopexy is a preferred option for those who are still growing.
