The Wayne State University Student Center[edit]

The Wayne State UniversityStudent Center[Definition 1] is a building located on the school’s Detroit campus. It is home to academic and recreational facilities that are open to be used by students, faculty and visitors. The center can be found across from the Undergraduate Library and just next to the Fitness and Recreation Center. It features a number of amenities ranging from administration and study lounges to dining, banking and a ballroom. A variety of spaces may also be reserved for meetings both in the Student Center building and around campus. These rooms are able to accommodate a wide range of group sizes and needs. Though parts are currently under renovation, the new Student Center aims to be completed in July 2015. The building will feature state-of-the-art facilities and services.


Building History

Construction was first approved by the board of governors on November 18, 1961. The groundbreaking started on May 1, 1966. It was to be made of three basic components: student activities, religious affairs, and food services. The building originally included: a main reception lounge seating up to 200 people, study lounges seating up to 250 people, banquet rooms seating up to 650 people, the Charles Brosberg Religious Center, and offices for the student activities administration. Food service included a 600 person main cafeteria, 800 person snack bar and a 150 person waiter service dining room with adjoining lounge. The architects responsible for designing this building were Allen B. Dow Associates. Construction began in 1966 and was finished in 1969. The building was to be named "The University Center Building". The total area was calculated to be 194,760 square feet with a rough estimate cost of $6,043,727. A replacement value was calculated to be $24,685,916 as of September, 1993.

Original construction costs included:

  • General contractor (Lerver-Linden construction Co.) at $3,065,074
  • Mechanical trades (sylvan plumbing and heating Co.) at $1,092,000
  • Electrical trades ( Standish electric engineering Co.) at $505,300
  • Kitchen trades (Great Lakes Hotel $ Supply Co.) at $454,300[1]

Renovations and Future Facilities

The Wayne State Student Center, built almost 50 years ago, will receive 100,000 square feet of renovations. Construction began in May, 2014 and will be completed in July, 2015. Patrons and staff will enjoy a more open, modern, and student-friendly environment.
