David Roy Stewart DPhil Oxon BSc BE Syd FTS FIE (1923-2006) was a Rhodes Scholar (NSW 1947), engineer, general manager and non-executive company director. He was awarded a Centenary Medal for "service to Australian society in technological industries".

Early life and education[edit]

David Roy Stewart was born 28 January 1923 in Sydney, New South Wales.[1]


War Service[edit]

Stewart's university studies were interrupted when he was reported for enlistment on 14 January 1943 in the Royal Australian Navy. He was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant (SP) from HMAS Rushcutter on 19 February 1946.[1]

Rhodes Scholar[edit]

The Rhodes Scholarship Committee to-night selected David Roy Stewart, Batchelor of Science, of Newcastle, as New South Wales Rhodes scholar for 1947. Stewart matriculated in engineering in 1940 and then transferred to science in which he gained distinction. He served with the Navy and, on discharge, returned to Sydney University to complete his engineering course. [2]

Career[edit]

In March 1991, Stewart became an non-executive director of investment bank McIntosh Securities Ltd and joined their audit committee.[3]
