UPikeDalton is a WIkipedia account that I created for my University English class as an assignment to learn how to use Wikipedia. Those who know me know I am a die-hard gamer, I love to play League of Legends, Path of Exile, and Call of Duty. I am also fascinated with technology and anything historic or science related. All through out high school I sat at a 4.0 GPA until my Senior year I slacked off a lot and graduated from Belfry High School in May 2013, with a 3.8 GPA

About Me[edit]

I have family all over the globe, from Canada to Australia to Mexico. I come from a cultural variety. I was born in Kelowna, BC. Canada and moves to the states when I was five, oddly enough my parents were both born and raised right here in Appalachia. My dad's side of the family is from Kentucky and split to Australia and Ohio, while on my mother's side they were from Ohio and moved to Kentucky and Florida. My family name can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britian and some parts of Ireland. We have this motto "Crescit sub pondere virtus" which translate to Virtue Thrives Under Oppression. Enough about my family background and back to me and my story, I am currently attending the University of Pikeville and majoring in Biology, specifically to be a Bio-Chemical Engineer. I plan on going here for my 4 year degree and then moving back to Canada to receive my Doctorate degree in Biology. Although biology was not my first choice of major I noticed it was what I was best at, out of all my skills, Science was the leader. Here are a few tid-bits about myself that a lot do not know, I used to ride BMX semi-professionally, I can also beatbox fairly well, and I am a motorhead. Anything dealing with ATV's and Motorcycles I am there.

Sports/Activities[edit]

I was never a big sports fan, but when I was a kid, sixth and seventh grade, I used to play football for Belfry Middle School. If you consider the items I listed about, BMX and beatboxing, a sport I do those as well. List of other sports and activities:

  • Fishing
  • Hunting
  • Archery
  • Wushu: Wing Chun (Southern form of Chinese Martial Arts)
  • Swimming
  • Sking
  • Hockey

Gaming Background[edit]

Every since I was a child I wanted to play videogames, they always fascinated me. My parents refused to buy me any type of gaming console until Christmas of 2000, I opened my gifts and the last box was a Playstation. Since that moment on I have bought every single gaming console or hand-held version. At any given time you can come to my house and find me playing video games. Ask my parents, it's my life. It's sad to say it like that, but I am doing what I like just like anyone else.

How Can Someone Hate Such a Beautiful Thing?[edit]

Technology... It has always been in my life, I love it and probably couldn't live without it. I honestly use it everyday; Whether it be coding in C++ or Java Script, or to countless hours online managing networks for friends, I do it all. Most people around where I live come to me when they are in need of tech help. My very first computer was a Gateway Desktop with Windows 95 installed on it, after that I upgraded to an Hp Desktop with Windows Vista, this was a huge change at the time due to all the new features Windows Vista had to offer. I stuck with the HP for the longest time until I bought my first laptop, I don't recall the brand, but I do remember how I broke it; I was raging (getting extremely mad) at League of Legends and I smashed my keyboard too hard and the pin inside of the HDD broke. Now we are into my new beast... the Gamer Ultra CrossFireX™ FX by CyberPowerPC. Enough about my computers, every thing I know about computers was not self taught, believe it or not I, unlike most, asked for help from my good friend Troy, I mean this guy is a Tech Guru. He taught me the internals and externals, the programming side of things I learned over the years of just simply being exposed to the technology environment.

They're people in the world who do not condone technology, people like this simply do not understand how much technology has improved our lives... not just our fundamental lives, but our life span in general. Take a moment to think... where would we be without technology? Probably in dirt huts on the side of a river somewhere using torches for light and having to scrap by day to day with what nature provides us. This seems like a pretty mundane way to live, what happens if we were to get sick? Without the proper medication, which has been made possible and improved by guess what... technology, even the most simple illness can be your last. I embrace technology and encourage everyone to at least give it a try. I promise there will be something you will enjoy about it.

Opening Pandora's Box[edit]

To the naked eye Wikipedia seems like a harmless place filled with vast arrangements of information. Much like a virus people manipulate the information posted on Wikipedia to their liking, whether it be to promote correct information or create false accusations. Newsflash, not everyone on Wikipedia is an expert on the subject.

In most of my English classes I was taught that Wikipedia should not be used as a viable source for any information that required research, I should only use it to search the topic I am writing about and then scroll to the bottom to find the resource links and use those instead. Let's be honest... they're a lot better ways to find information on the world wide web. Here are a few: Google, Bing, Ask, Yahoo, and countless others. All you have to do is type it in and click search, webpages will show up, simply use the one with the highest ratings and compare it with a few other sites to see if the information matches up.

Although I view Wikipedia in a negative way, I shouldn't be to harsh on it. It has a lot of great features and a lot of information. I plan on using Wikipedia more in the future if and only if, it undergoes plagiarism checks and shows me an accurate information report. This can happen and I know somewhere in the future it will. Until then I will lurk in the shadows of Wikipedia waiting to snatch a good lead.
