Westinghouse Solar (NasdaqWEST) (pronounced wes-ting-hous soh-ler) is an American photovoltaic system founded on April 14, 2001 and headquartered in Campbell, California, United States. It was formerly known as Akeena Solar, Inc. and changed its name to Westinghouse Solar, Inc. in April 2011.

Westinghouse Solar engages in the design, manufacture, integration, and installation of solar power systems under the Westinghouse name. Through the company’s partnerships with numerous authorized dealers throughout the United States and Canada, Westinghouse Solar sells its AC solar panels to solar installers, trade workers, and do-it-yourself customers for both residential and commercial projects.

History[edit]

Westinghouse Solar headquarters in Campbell, CA

Akeena Solar was founded by Barry Cinnamon on February 2001 in Saratoga, CA in an office above his garage.

In 2009, Akeena Solar introduced a partnership to develop and market Andalay solar panel systems with ordinary AC house current. The Andalay solar panel was the industry’s first integrated solution that enabled plug-and-play solar installation. Through its use of splice technology, the Andalay panel enabled both positive and negative elements to connect together. Through Andalay’s built-in racking, wiring, and grounding, the parts count was reduced by 70% and rooftop labor was reduced by up to 50%. [5]All of the electrical connection was built on the side of the Andalay panels, integrating a wireless technique with less installation time. All of these technologies have been patented with Akeena Solar.

The Andalay solar panel systems was also featured on the hit reality TV show, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” which took place in San Bernardino County on April 2009.[6]

In 2010, Westinghouse approached Akeena Solar for a collaboration and entered into an exclusive worldwide agreement to manufacture, distribute, market and install all of its solar panels under the Wesinghouse name. [7] As part of the Westinghouse transition, Akeena’s wholly-owned subsidiary Andalay Solar was renamed Westinghouse Solar. [8] Westinghouse Solar continues to offer commercial and residential solar technology,

Corporate Leadership[edit]

Barry Cinnamon CEO/Founder Mr.Cinnamon is a widely recognized expert on solar power, and a long-time advocate of its use. Products[edit]

Solar Panels[edit]

Westinghouse Solar’s photovoltaic cells are made from microscopic wafers cut from a high-purity, single-crystal cylinder or boule. The advanced monocrystalline solar cell technology captures and converts more of the sun's energy, while technology on each panel ensures maximum power production. Unlike ordinary high-voltage DC current powering systems, Westinghouse Solar power systems have a built-in technology that delivers safe AC power. In addition, the design guards the system from the corrosive effects of sun, wind, and rain to provide decades of optimal performance.

Westinghouse solar panels require 80% fewer parts to install and maintain. They are also sealed under toughed, high-transmission glass and secured in framing technology to create a panel that is both weather resistant and extremely-reliable.

Flat Roof Solar Power System[edit]

The Westinghouse Solar Flat Roof Solar Power System combines a lightweight, non-penetrating mounting system with the patented Westinghouse Solar panel technology to deliver a high performance solution that is both easy to install and ideal for flat rooftops with weight or area constraints.

The system is pre-engineered to an angle to enable installation of more watts on the roof and capture more energy from the sun. Westinghouse Solar's integrated grounding and wiring delivers built-in reliability.

The lightweight aluminum mounting systems ships flat with minimal part count. It installs and grounds faster than any other mounting systems. The non-corrosive aluminum and stainless steel components are not susceptible to UV deterioration and combustion hazards.
