Maine Coon
[edit]Hello, your edits to the Maine Coon article are welcomed and a great additon, with the exception of most of polydactyl claims. But in doing so, you deleted the formatted referenced links linking to a reliable source, and replaced them with a self published source. I couldn't figure out what was what, so, I reverted all the edits you made. I'm sorry about that, but it was too difficult to remove all the self published references and add back the reliable ones, without messing up the whole article. I tried to combine them, but it proved too difficult so I just gave up.
Self published websites, such as GeoCities, are discouraged. In fact there were many such references in the article before, but were removed by someone else a while ago for this reason.
You are most welcome to add most of that information back as it is very interesting and does indeed improve the article, but please do not delete the reliably sourced information, as Cat Fanciers is more reliable than self published ones. Hope you understand. Thanks. ←Gee♥Alice 03:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
polytrak database
[edit]How did you get it to sort by coat color?--Marhawkman (talk) 06:42, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
From the polytrak link select "database" (in the sidebar menu), then select the desired "spreadsheet" (at the bottom of section I). Coat can be viewed from the spreadsheet "color" column. Perhaps, your own spread sheet software can be helpful to sort/tally the color text. Sire and dam data can be tallied separately and the results combined.--4coons (talk) 10:46, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Size change
[edit]Size: Leo isn't fat. 35 Lbs or not, he's "big" not fat, or so his vet says.
Read sources: http://www.verismocat.com/htmscripts/leo-guinness.htm
Thus your comment:
"However, such large size feline oddity and exaggerated large size claims may be due to the effects of castration and diet which are known to result in significant weight gain. Such feline oddities are not representative of the breed."
is severely detrimental to the article as it gives the impression that maine coons over those stated weights are fat. Also neutering does not affect a cat's LENGTH.
from: http://www.messybeast.com/freak-size.htm
"The average adult male cat is 28-29 inches long (71-73 cm) including a tail of 11 inches (28 cm). The average adult female cat is 26 inches long (6 cm) including a tail of 9.5 inches (24 cm). There is great variation between breeds. Snowbie measured almost 41 inches (103 cm) from nose to tail-tip, including his 12 inch (31 cm) tail. Guinness have now distanced themselves from animal obesity records and instead record "Longest Cat". The world's longest cat, outdoing previous holder Snowbie, is 8 year old Maine Coon Leo (full name Verismo's Leonetti Reserve Red), owned by Frieda Ireland and Carroll Damron of Chicago weighed in at 15.8 kg (35 lb) and measured 121.9 cm (48 in) from nose to tail. Leo's diet includes dry cat food, green vegetables, basil, parsley and blue cheese. Leo's vet, and Guinness judges, stress that Leo is not overweight and that he holds the record for his length, not his weight."
Leo is definatey not fat, and he isn't quite unique. Sure he's the largest known, but as big as he is anything close is still huge.--Marhawkman (talk) 23:23, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
There is no interest in any of these biggest/longest/huge odities. None of these are relevant nor are they representative of the breed and are confusion.--4coons (talk) 10:29, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- The point I'm making is that they ARE representative of the breed. They may be above what is concidered average but they are part of the breed standard.--Marhawkman (talk) 05:33, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
origin
[edit]why did you feel the need to delete that too?--Marhawkman (talk) 23:25, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- http://www.kvasir.co.uk/historycoon.htm would count as a source.--Marhawkman (talk) 23:37, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
That site is not a source; but rather, a parrot of errors, misinformation, and illusions. Wiki policy does not allow references to private sites. --4coons (talk) 10:29, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's another of the sites used as references for the page. It's the site linked under the GCCF breed standard.--Marhawkman (talk) 05:40, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
