Geo names

Hi, just checking with you, as you are more clued up than me on this. Do the recent changes to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic_names) actually reflect consensus - either at WT:VIETNAM or of WP en toto for capitalization of Province? In ictu oculi (talk) 00:52, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

I don't see that there's been any real discussion on the subject on the Vietnam pages, and I don't know of any MoS guidance on whether to capitalise 'Province', 'District' etc when it's part of a name, but the general practice (with the notable exception of India) seems to be to capitalise it (e.g Category:Provinces of Turkey or Category:Regions of Guinea-Bissau) when the subdivision is of an official nature (as distinct from just a roughly defined geographical description). I was bringing the article text into line with the spelling in the article title. However, looking at the sources, it seems the final "é" may be a mistake. I've asked the person who moved it to that spelling (6 years ago!) to explain. Colonies Chris (talk) 17:59, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

It's over-compensation in US sources. Víctor Marté has the same problem. The surname Marté does actually exist in French (Spanish immigrants to France) but not in Spanish. Cheers. In ictu oculi (talk) 04:12, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
