Simple English projects[edit]

Hi h2g2bob!

Since I want a ninja-fast response, too, I thought I'd come to your En Wikipedia talk page, hoping that you'll see it sooner, but I'll put this on your SEWiktionary talk page, too, just in case. Remember Netoholic and his hypocritical campaign against all simple English projects except SEWikipedia? Well, because of some developments in the situation at SEWikipedia, he's taken it to the next level. He has proposed that those projects be closed. I know you don't want that to happen, so please vote oppose. I made a sort of advisory banner for the Main Page of all those projects, which makes it convenient for you to vote:

Advisory: Some users from other projects are trying to close Simple English Wiktionary, SEWikibooks, and SEWikiquote, even though we've barely begun! If you think these projects should not be closed, vote oppose here and meta:Inactive wikis.

Fair use images[edit]

Hi Bob. Fair use images can't be used outside articlespace - we only use copyrighted images when we can claim an encyclopaedic need for them, so all images marked 'fair use' can't be used in userspace (or on talk pages, templates, portals, etc). I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Read your page and you seem like a very interesting guy... I've got an interest in physics myself. I've been reading about Bose-Einstein condensates and such recently. Thank you very much for helping me out with the Viking metal thing, I'm still a n00b here despite a few hard years of work in the computer world. I am %100 behind you with the open-source software, I run debian gnu/linux on my other computer... unfortunately I have this computer slaved to Windows...

So you're the one who keeps removing my text?? Okay... First and foremost, thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I only wish you would refrain from blocking my one single contribution, again and again. I'm sure if you knew me and what I was about, you would understand. You seem like a cool guy... in fact, check out my myspace.com/blphnx (see, I'm giving up my identity to you... please cut me some slack) Just so you know, Stephen Hawking did say that, word for word and when I first heard it with my own ears, it was stirring. Stephen has a message, he wants to share it and I'm trying to help him do it. Since you seem to have some respect for the guy, for science, for knowledge and sharing it... then why may I ask, do you keep taking that urgent message off there? It belongs there, under the topic 'Global Warming', don't you see that? Dude, I don't buy the whole "If we're good and faithful, we're someday going to join God in Heaven" thing either. I believe this is our one shot at life and we have an obligation, a responsibility to the future, unlike most Joes out there who think everything is in 'God's' hands (or worse, the government's), but that's a whole different story, neither here nor there...

PS - Neutral point of view?? Are you kidding? That page is about Stephen Hawking. The quote is from his point of view. I don't think this is a valid argument. Nor do I understand it. If you or anyone is having trouble coming to terms with the reality of Global Warming just give me a chance and I will enlighten you; beginning with the point of view which is clearly expressed through that simple but powerful quote from Stephen Hawking for starters.

I read that article on minkowski space, that is rather convenient isn't it? I am actually still in high school (despite the fact I should be in first-year uni) due to unforseen circumstances (ahem...).

Hoping everything is well, did you have a good winter holiday? I've been wanting to get into editing pages here, but I don't seem to know much about anything useful, or anything that isn't already in the encyclopedia. Oh well.. I mean, I do know a lot about computers, but everything I know is already up here. And I'm not sure where to go from here? Do I start looking up published research on google and transferring information to wikipedia or what?

VLC question[edit]

Hi David,

You seem to have added the bit about VideoLan Client 0.8.6 being able to play WMV9. Do you know how this is possible? According to Microsoft WMV is an open standard, but not a free codec. Implementers are apparently liable to licence fees. Assuming that VLC can't afford to do anything illegal, how can they implement WMV9? "open source"[edit]

On your user page, you say that open source is great because it is free as in freedom and price. But, that's not always true. A company could make a commercial open source product. Maybe you'd have to pay $10000 to get its source code. That's not free software. I think you should use the term free software instead. --wj32 ^{talk | contribs} 02:48, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if I'm supposed to comment here (if not, please tell me). I agree that open source software and free software isn't logically the same thing even though the "open source definition" does define it this way. However it is easy to get into a semantics war about this and so I encourage people to say what they like, or use "free and open source software" (FOSS). --Theosch 17:36, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a tricky debate. While the definition of Free Software are Open Source Software is almost exactly the same, neither the FSF or the OSI can enforce the term they use. Open source has a wider meaning outside of software, and so is sometimes confused as only meaning that the source code is available (even under strict conditions). I personally prefer Free Software, though that can be confused with freeware. I'm not overly concerned about the terms used, the important thing is that these freedoms exist and people can use the software if they wish. The Free Software movement was founded by Richard Stallman. The Open Source movement was founded by Eric Raymond. They often have loud and very public arguments, leading one to believe that they are bitter enemies. While Free Software and Open Source Software each share source code, the two movements have very different aims. I knew that my edit for "Ku Klux Klan" would be controversial, but I think I have a case. Noted economist Steven Levitt refers to the group as a terrorist group in his acclaimed book "Freakonomics." Furthermore, because of their religious practices, and heterdox Christianity, they can rightly be described as a cult. "Fraternal organization" does not speak of their aims whatsoever. Your minor changes on creation-evolution controversy[edit]

RIAA NPOV[edit]

I have returned the NPOV tag. I specifically added statements in the talk page about the NPOV issue. Either you didn't see them (they are up in the middle of the page under the subheading discussing NPOV previously) or you chose to ignore them.

The article is quite blatantly biased for the reasons I stated. It needs to have something other than the "facts speak for themselves." In general, such a statement is made to justify skewing the point of view through pointing to only half the facts, which, indeed, is what I mentioned in my talk page notes.

To be neutral, the article needs to address both the situations where the RIAA has been successful in its efforts as well as the situations where it has run into difficulties. Also, language which is derogatory to the RIAA needs to be removed (I gave a specific example).

Thanks for uploading Image:DragonForce_Soldiers_of_the_Wasteland.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
