Notability of Odyssey Percussion Theatre[edit]

Being "prudent" is by no means whatsoever an argument for inclusion/against deletion. Furthermore, the existence of similar articles does not justify the existence of this one — indeed, it may indicate that the others are not notable and simply haven't been found yet. I stand by my assessment for speedy deletion.

Ensembles with Division I status in DCI have pretty much been established as automatically notable for Wikipedia. The group that your group belongs to has not reached that status as of yet.

Please forgive me for not responding correct. I am new and still learning the ropes a bit.

I assert that being "Percussion Independent World" is parallel to being Division 1 status, since there's no classification as Division 1 in WGI. PIW is the highest classification a group can be in WGI. What is notable about this is that Odyssey achieved this status first year out and made finals. This is something that is not normally done. Most groups come out in Independent Open (Division 2) and then get bumped up after a year of competition. Those that have come out in Independent World traditionally hasn't done well. Odyssey was established in Independent World straight out of the gate and finished in the top 6.

Would this group not fall under the Organization WikiProject?

Other note about this organization is how it has brought many people with varying backgrounds together for a common goal. There are former members now on tour with Blast that are on staff with Odyssey as well as former staff that is now on tour with Cirque du Soleil and from local universities (Auburn University, University of Georgia and Georgia Tech). I think the problem here is that various editors and administrators seem to agree that individual units that compete in WGI are not themselves notable by Wikipedia standards. The consensus seems to be that WGI is somewhat of a "niche" competition that does not rise to the level of recognition of DCI or DCA. While WGI merits its own article, individual competing units don't appear to. This article was apparently speedy-deleted twice by separate administrators, once after I flagged the first version and again after another editor flagged it when you re-posted the article. When an article is speedy-deleted twice in quick succession, chances are pretty good that the subject isn't going to meet notability standards, and it's time to move on to something else.

So who decides that this isn't a "niche" competition (seeing that over 35k were at finals this year)? Also, it was speedy deleted the first time because of the way it was written. Looking back at the original format I would agree to that deletion. The second deletion I don't agree with. It did provide history and merit. It was a creditable article. The easy answer is to read over WP:NOTE to understand Wikipedia's notability standards. Having said that, it is still somewhat subjective. Coverage of a subject by the news media — newspapers, TV, magazines and such — helps determine notability, especially if it is online and can be linked to in a citation (footnote). Make sure they are reliable sources, too. I can't comment on the second article you submitted because it came and went before I saw it. Realkyhick 15:31, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
