Bulgarian Operators[edit]

Hello!

I would simply like to ask why you keep removing Max Telecom from the bulgarian operators template? I understand why you removed it on 4 Jun 08 and on 19 Aug 08 (because they were external links), but why remove it on 19 Mar 09? What is "wrong" with the information?

Before you ask, i have no affiliation to the company, i just like to see complete lists of things - after all, if we are to do something, we need to do it right, no?

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.  :-) BigSteve (talk) 11:52, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, BigSteve!

I remove Max Telecom from "Mobile network operators" template as this operator uses a technology that is not proved as "mobile". The list of worldwide mobile network operators includes only the GSM, UMTS and CDMA operators and do not include the WiMAX operators I keep the same logic in the Bulgarian mobile operators template. Otherwise we have to add not only Max Telecom, but another five bulgarian WiMAX operators. I believe this would be wrong. Tsystems (talk) 00:07, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

that's cool. wow, i really did not realize there were that many 4g networks in Bulgaria, thanks for that link to the page on the wimax networks. i definitely agree with you on that now.
as you are someone who clearly understands the subject pretty well, how about this as a development - adding an extra subsection to those templates for wimax networks, something like :

...for a more complete understanding of the modernization of telephony in each country?

I realize many of the networks mentioned on the WiMAX operators page do not have their own wikipedia pages yet, but including them in the templates would actually prompt people into creating those pages.

I feel that this is relevant since technologies are always moving forward and despite the huge difference in characteristics between, say, a Nokia 3310 and a Blackberry, the fact is that today's 4G technologies are actually fulfilling the same social functions that the ordinary GSM networks used to do 10-15 years ago. what do you think?

i won't do anything if you disagree, it's just a suggestion for you to consider, for the sake of completeness. and even if you do agree, i don't think i'd do it for more than a couple of countries anyway, i've not been able to spend as much time on wikipedia lately as i'd like to.

take care of yourself! BigSteve (talk) 14:07, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, again,

I thing adding WiMAX operators is not a good idea and I will explain you why.

First, WiMAX actually is not really mobile. Even if some of the operators advertise that they use certified mobile technology with smooth handovers, etc, the problem is that they have no coverage to use them as "mobile". For example, here in Bulgaria, the operators use 4-5 base stations in a city like Sofia (pop. 1,6 millions). The result is that their service may be used only near the base stations and they sell their modems (they are as big as the ADSL modem) only in this areas. Even if you have WiMAX phone or little modem, you will not be able to use it when you move towards the city. While on the other hand, the operators show in their maps full coverage in the city and even in the suburbs.

Second, WiMAX is not real 4G standard, it is Pre-4G. One of the main objectives for 4G standard is the speed of 100 Mbps. In Bulgaria, the maximum speed for WiMAX is 4 Mbps (GSM/UMTS operators offer up to 21 Mbps). The WiMAX operators advertise themselves as "the next generation" while they are slower that the previous generation.

Please don't understand me wrong, I have nothing against WiMAX. I really appreciate what WiMAX did in the last years for the wireless broadband. However, the current situation (at least in Bulgaria) is that the WiMAX operators do not offer real alternative to GSM/UMTS operators. They are quite similar to the ADSL, LAN, Cable and Wi-Fi operators. They advertise them as a "mobile operators" just to take advantage against their concurrent ISPs.

You may say that some of the disadvantages are because the operators are new in the market. But the 5 WiMAX operators in Bulgaria have their licenses since 2005. Four years are quite enough to expand their networks at least in the big cities. I believe they do not want to do this, because they prefer not to invest but to use the energy of the bigger GSM/UMTS operators in their fight with the fixed operators.

About the category in Wikipedia. I think it will be better if we add all the Telecommunication operators in one place. You know, the mobile operators started to offer fixed services, the fixed operators try to be mobile (not only with WiMAX but using Wi-Fi, satellite, radio relays etc.). On the other hand, most of the operators that in the past offered Internet, now offer telephony and vice verse. I think it will be best if we do not separate the companies to mobile/fixed/internet/telephony but to separate them by technology. For example, if there is an article for an operator that uses either GSM/UMTS, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and ADSL services, on the bottom of the page may appear:

What do you think about this?

yeah, nice one. propose it on the telecoms portal, people mite go for it? BigSteve (talk) 15:49, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
