Villers-le-Sec is a commune in the Meuse department in Lorraine in north-eastern France.

Geography

Its name comes from that there are no rivers, because Villers-le-Sec is located on a plateau between the valleys of Ornain and of Saulx. However, the village is not completely deprived of water since it is located above ground and the ponds are very numerous. Although their water level is much lower than before (some even disappeared), the neighbourhoods of the village are rather marshy.

History

Villers-le-Sec once had more than 500 inhabitants. At that time, the locality lived primarily next to the iron mine. There were five bistrots, but the last of those has been closed for more than five years. Wood remains a significant resource today for all of the canton of Montiers-sur-Saulx, along with raw materials and loggers, sawmills, cabinet work, furniture manufacturers. The only company which remains today is it distilling, which produces drops of mirabelle during the wet season.
