Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Image placeholders/Question 7: Is 'Template:Images needed' an acceptible article space alternative to 'Category:Wikipedia image placeholders'?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Requests to expand an article with images, infoboxes, etc. traditionally are made on the article talk page. There is a set of talk page image request templates for this very purpose. See Expansion requests in the talk namespace. Placeholder images largely are expansion requests (request to expand the article with an image), but are being used in article space. It is their use in article space that seems to be the main problem. The list of approved article space expansion request items are at Expansion requests and that list does not include Wikipedia image placeholders. If an outcome of this discussion is to maintain the use of Wikipedia image placeholders in article space, then Wikipedia image placeholders should be listed at Expansion requests. However, a more consistent stylistic approach would be an article space image request template, such as Template:Images needed. Examples of how Template:Images needed appears in article space are at these links. Should Template:Images needed be used in addition to Wikipedia image placeholders or should Template:Images needed replace Wikipedia image placeholders as the way expansion requests are made in article space? • Comment I don't know if I'd go as far as calling it "acceptable", but it is certainly "better" than the current image placeholders. I'm not that fond of the other expansion request templates anyway, but I can live with them. I don't think it would be appropriate to use both the Images needed template and the image placeholder. Putting this template at the bottom of the page would probably satisfy some editors. – jaksmata 15:57, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No. I feel the opposite of Jaksmata. A discrete image in the infobox where we expect to see a photo anyway seems better to me. In addition both this template and any envisioned bottom "stub-style" template do not help in showing how or where the image can be added appropriately to the article, whereas the placeholder image lets the editor simply change the name of the image from placeholder.svg to the image they uploaded. The images needed template should be used in other cases where an image would be helpful to illustrating some particular aspect of the article outside of the infobox. • No. Template:Images needed is more sightly than the image placeholder, more acceptable, but I don't think it belongs in article space. As a general recommendation for improving the article it belongs on the Talk page. --Kleinzach (talk) 23:50, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No. -- recommend improving the placeholder instead of putting this particular template in. Guroadrunner (talk) 03:09, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
