Promoting this program[edit]

Can we share this at WT:TAMBAY? That is where most of the active ENWP editors from the Philippines talk shop. --seav (talk) 22:55, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

of course! Please do! We were about to do so ourselves. Ijon (talk) 00:08, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, can Wikimedia Philippines promote this on its usual PR channels? Or should this strictly be limited to getting editor participation via on-wiki (sitenotice) methods only? --seav (talk) 23:34, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, by all means. But let's wait with promoting via other channels until we have had a chance to discuss the program a little. Ijon (talk) 00:08, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Participation outside the English Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, Asaf. Will this project be deployed only on the English Wikipedia? Or will Philippine-language Wikipedias be able to benefit from this experiment as well through direct or indirect participation? If this is successful on the English Wikipedia, we're hoping to point people to the local Wikipedias as well, which are significantly less-developed. --Sky Harbor (talk) 01:58, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Yes, the current proposed project will be deployed only on EnWp. If Philippine-language Wikipedias communities are interested in deploying similar experiments, I would advice taking a look at some of the previous work on Arabic and Bengali Wikipedia, as these projects were designed specifically aiming to recruit new editors in small size wikipedias. Thanks. --Haithams (talk) 19:01, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Graph[edit]

Hello there, this a great project! BTW, it seems like your graphs (Wikipedia:Geo-targeted_Editors_Participation#Editors) show the Palestinian Territories instead. --Atlasowa (talk) 21:32, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. They were showing the Philippines at the time we placed the link there; it seems there's a bug in the data retrieval. We're looking into it. Ijon (talk) 02:35, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it coincidence or a good opportunity to practice editing?[edit]

Looking at the time frame, it coincides with the Philippine general election, 2013. There are many red links in that article like biographies. If you want to dare nationwide like region specific geo notices, there is Philippine gubernatorial elections, 2013 and Philippine local elections, 2013. Municipal, Provincial and City articles can be expanded. There is already initial talks to expand municipal and city articles in Eastern Visayas. --Exec8 (talk) 21:53, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is cool! As stubs to work on, we will be offering various topics including random articles about Filippino politicians (Example - Politicians : Raul_del_Mar  · Potenciano_Lesaca  · Template:Philippines-congressman-stub  · Random topic) and hopefully that will be a nice coincidence with the general elections. Thank you for pointing that out. --Haithams (talk) 23:33, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oversight[edit]

This will require some form of oversight. Non-native English speakers will make many spelling and grammer errors, and especially editors from the Philippines are prone to just copy and paste from other sites (see Wikipedia talk:Tambayan Philippines/Archive31#Copyright violations, or here, here). -- P 1 9 9   17:57, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly. We will be tracking the contributions of the registered users in this project, which will enable us to spot and deal with such violations when occurred. Thank you for pointing this issue out. --Haithams (talk) 20:33, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lots of people make spelling mistakes. Indeed, you misspelt grammar yourself :). It's a Wiki; errors will get fixed. :) Ijon (talk) 22:25, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good one! But I'm really more concerned by the amount of plagiarism and copyright violations. That doesn't get fixed, my experience shows that it often remains for many years. -- P 1 9 9   14:05, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, that's a larger problem. We'll be paying close attention to newbie contributions resulting from this recruitment drive, and see if we can get well-intended copyright violators to correct course quickly, before a lot of cleanup work is created. Ijon (talk) 22:45, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notice spelling error[edit]

In the Wikipedia:Geo-targeted Editors Participation ad (or notice), I noticed that the spelling is wrong. The ad stated "Join us & help improve Wikipedia's coverage of the Phillipines". The editor might have overlooked the word "Philippines" with double L rather than double P in the middle. In the ad "You can improve Wikipedia's coverage of the Philippines. Learn how!", the ad appear nice. --Exec8 (talk) 15:30, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Thank you for pointing this out. --Haithams (talk) 20:16, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
