Actual Nisanyan reference added to History section. History of Armenian Genocide is more than welcome (and likely necessary), but ideally through reliable sources, and not one that contradicts its own "citations". I might get around to reading the sources the website cites and supplementing information later. undo

If an etymology is to be proposed, it should be with some sort of evidence -- it seems consensus that the name *is* of unknown origin and appears first in late Ottoman records. In general, is the VGM source reliable? There are no sources, and the placename source it gives (Index Anatolicus) definitively calls the origin unknown. undo
