This is basic phonology. The phonological analysis adopted in this article doesn't allow for the use of a term like "long vowel" at the phonemic level. undo Tag: Undo

There's no contradiction between the transcription and the use of the term "long"-per the Handbook of the International Phonetic Association, "as in Finnish orthography, length can also be indicated in phonetic transcription by double letters: e.g. Finnish maatto [mɑɑttɔ] 'electrical earth/ground'". undo Tags: Undo Reverted

In Southwestern Finnish dialects there were no "yleisgeminaatio" and so only t, p, k and s have lengthened in certain conditions by "erikoisgeminaatio". So it seems that there is no such thing as a distinctive length of "j" and "v" anywhere in Finnish (i.e. vv and jj are always ether in complementary distribution with v and j (kuva : kuvvaa ; short vowel and short "v", long vowel and long "v") or they are a result of sandhi (sev verran (sen verran)) undo
