Reginald Gray was born in Dublin in 1930. After Studies at The National College of Art in 1953 he was a student of Cecil ffrench Salkeld ARHA learning old master techniques. His first work as an artist was designing decor and costumes for The Pike, Gate and Globe Theatres in Dublin. In 1957 he moved to London and had his first one man exhibition at the Abbot and Holder Gallery. He became part of The School of London that was led by Bacon, Freud and Aurbach. In 1960 he painted from life a portrait of fellow Dubliner Francis Bacon which now hangs in the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery London. In 1963 Gray moved again this time to France where he has lived for the past 45 years. In 1994, UNESCO in Paris gave Gray a large retrospective exhibition. Gray's works appear in many public and private collections such as The Museum of London, The National Gallery Australia, The Royal Family of Brunei and The Church of The Holy Cross, St Pancras, London. Other subjects he has portrayed are, Samuel Beckett, Ted Hughes, John Jordan, Derry O'Sullivan, Juliette Binoche and Helena Bonham Carter. Reginald Gray now lives in London and Paris and works from both cities. |
