Premakeerthi de Alwis (June 1947–July 31, 1989) was a Sri Lankan broadcaster, lyricist and television personality. He worked as an anchorman on state-run television.

Early life

Alwis was the second child in his family. He initially studied at Maligakanda Maha Vidyalaya and later joined Ananda College in Maradana, Sri Lanka. While at school he compiled the annual magazine ‘'Anandaya’' and was the co-editor of the Dhamma Jayanthi monthly newspaper. Though his father wanted him to join the Railways Department as he had, the young boy was drawn towards the radio and imitating the news presenters. Journalist Arthur U. Amarasena, who was the editor of Wisithura (a film weekly), offered Alwis his first major break as a feature writer.

Radio Ceylon

In 1961, at the age of thirteen, he entered Radio Ceylon for the first time with the hope of becoming a singer. He failed the audition, but showed skill as a script reader. He took part in several children’s programmes under the guidance of his mentor, Karunaratne Abeysekera.

On December 17, 1967 he became a relief announcer for Radio Ceylon and started rising from there. He was also a wordsmith who penned hundreds of songs for various artists. In 1969, he wrote his first song, Hada Puda Asune Senehasa Bendune, for Rupa Indumathi and Malkanthi Nandasiri. The same year he wrote songs for the film Lokuma Hinawa.[1]

As a Lyricist

He wrote hundreds of lyrics for Victor Ratnayake, Mervin Perera, Freddie Silva, Malini Bulathsinhala, J. A. Milton Perera, Mohideen Baig, Milton Mallawarachchi, Priya Suriyasena and most of singers in Sri Lanka. Among some of his popular songs were Beri Bara Hindai Daruwan Dunne, Kurullanta Gee Gayanna, Mudu Parama Supiwithuru, Ma Ekkala Amanapawa Wee Dabara, Eda Re Guwan Thotupoledi, Adaraneeya Neranjana, Raththaran Menik Muthu Mokatada Ewa, Aaron Mama, Mannaram Piti Welle, Eka Gini Koorai Mulu Gedarama Thibune, Me Nagaraya, Adare Ran Bingun Nesu, Oba Dedunna Akasaye, Sanda Midulata Enawa, and hundreds of others.

He also wrote songs for about 160 films.[1]

Death

Alwis, who was 42, was dragged from his house and murdered on the night of July 31, 1989. The murder has been blamed on the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, although no official ruling has been made.[2][3]
