Cad Bane is a fictional character in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. He is a cold and manipulative bounty hunter from the planet Duro.
The Clone Wars
In his first appearance in "Hostage Crisis", Bane, along with his posse of bounty hunters, are hired by the Hutts to free Ziro the Hutt in a Coruscant prison. The bounty hunters march into the Senate building, where Bane coldly tosses a thermal detonator into a crowded guard barracks, eliminating the security of the Senate. Bane then takes a group of Senators hostage in the east wing, cutting off all communications, and makes his demands to the Chancellor.
Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala happen to be on the proceedings and would eventually thwart Bane's last act of treachery — even though Bane left with a liberated Ziro the Hutt, Bane was set to detonate explosives that would have killed the hostages. Anakin saves the Senators from the resulting blast.[1] Cad Bane returns as more of a major character in season two of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In "Holocron Heist", Bane is contacted by Darth Sidious for a special assignment: the capture of a Holocron from within the heavily-guarded Jedi Temple. The season finale leads into a multi-part arc featuring Bane as the primary foe for the Jedi heroes.[2]
Development
"Something you notice about George Lucas after a while is that he'll mention a name like 'Mace Windu' in a [1973] version of Star Wars, and then it pops up in 1999. So, this, I guess might have been an idea George had for the character Cad Bane way back when, and now finally he's getting around to bringing him to the screen in The Clone Wars."
David Filoni
The character was created for the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series. He was first featured in the series first season finale, "Hostage Crisis". He is voiced by Corey Burton . The director of "Hostage Crisis" Giancarlo Volpe compared Cad Bane to another Star Wars bountyhunter Boba Fett stating,
The crew loves Cad Bane, and I really think the fans will, too. He brings a serious bad-ass sensibility to Star Wars. He's a lethal and ruthless bounty hunter, and you see that right away in the episode. Unlike Boba Fett, Cad doesn't take prisoners.[3]
Originally, supervising director Dave Filoni and series writer Henry Gilroy planned to create a bounty hunter called Durge, a character that was introduced in the 2003 incarnation of Clone Wars comics and animation. Durge would then be re-imagined as a human character, and his more outlandish alien features redesigned, but this exploration was shortlived after the suggestion of series producer and Star Wars creator George Lucas to go Western. Burton took inspiration from the film actor Peter Lorre in voicing Bane and used the character's pre-established Western American influences to bring the bounty hunter to life while retaining the alien features of the Duros species in the Star Wars universe with his own original characterization. Burton's voice was then modified on the computer by the series' sound production team. In Filoni's research in developing Bane, he came across an unlabeled concept illustration from the original Star Wars trilogy of a gun-toting spacer with a wide-brimmed hat.[4]
Expanded Universe
Cad has appeared in two online Clone Wars comics published by StarWars.com.[5][6] Bane also appears in the video game Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes.[7]
