Ricardo José Araújo Ferreira (born 25 November 1992) is a professional soccer player who plays as a central defender.

After finishing his youth career with Milan, he went to play for Empoli, Olhanense, Paços de Ferreira, Braga, Belenenses SAD and Farense, amassing Primeira Liga totals of 65 matches and two goals over seven seasons.

Ferreira formerly represented Portugal internationally, switching to the Canada national team in 2021.

Club career

Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada to Portuguese parents,[2][3] Ferreira started playing soccer with Dixie SC and Brampton Youth SC, also being a part of the Canadian Soccer Association national training centre program and Ontario's youth select teams.[4] He later moved to Major League Soccer club Toronto FC's TFC Academy before transferring to FC Porto at the age of 15. He was included in the latter's 2010–11 UEFA Europa League squad list, but never appeared officially for the first team.

On 8 July 2011, Ferreira signed for A.C. Milan on a free transfer.[5][6] He played his last year as a junior with the Rossoneri.[7]

For 2012–13, Ferreira was loaned to fellow Italian side Empoli FC, in Serie B.[8] He made his professional debut on 25 September 2012, coming on as a substitute for Vincent Laurini in the 29th minute of an eventual 0–2 away loss against Calcio Padova.[9]

Subsequently, Ferreira competed in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, being a backup at S.C. Olhanense[10] and F.C. Paços de Ferreira[11] and often starting at S.C. Braga.[12] He contributed nine appearances in the latter club's quarter-final run in the 2015–16 edition of the UEFA Europa League, scoring in the group stage against FC Slovan Liberec (2–1 home win)[13] but netting twice in his own goal in the 0–4 away loss to FC Shakhtar Donetsk (6–1 on aggregate).[14]

On 3 January 2018, during the first half of the league fixture away to Boavista FC, Ferreira suffered another[15] knee injury, being sidelined for the rest of the season.[16] Exactly one year later, while appearing in a LigaPro match for the reserve team, he relapsed.[17]

In May 2019, Braga announced Ferreira would be leaving the Estádio Municipal de Braga when his contract expired the following month.[18] On 31 January 2020, the free agent signed with Belenenses SAD.[19]

Ferreira agreed to a one-year deal at newly promoted S.C. Farense on 30 September 2020.[20] The following January, he became a free agent.[21][22]

International career

Canadian-born, Ferreira chose to represent Portugal internationally, going on to win 22 caps at youth level. His only for the under-21 team came on 15 October 2012, in a 0–1 friendly loss against Ukraine.[23] Ferreira first appeared with the senior side on 14 November 2017, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 friendly draw to the United States.[24]

On 5 February 2021, however, he announced a change of national associations and became eligible to represent Canada.[4] He received his first call-up a month later for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and the Cayman Islands,[25] making his debut on 29 March in the 11–0 trouncing of the latter nation.[26]
