'''Lohani''', also known as '''Nuhani,''' is a [[Pashtun people|Pashtun]] tribal sub-group among the [[Lodi (Pashtun tribe)|Lodi]] tribe of the [[Bettani]] tribal confederacy.<ref name=":0">{{Cite book |last=Office |first=Punjab Settlement Commissioner's |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=LnIIAAAAQAAJ |title=Report of the Land Revenue Settlement of the Dera Ismail Khan District of the Punjab, 1872-79 |last2=Tucker |first2=H. ==History==
During the early reign of the [[Mughal Empire|Mughal]] Emperor [[Akbar]], the Lohani tribes were expelled from their home in Ghazni after coming into conflict with the [[Sulaimankhel]] tribe.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1">{{Cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=mGMiAAAAMAAJ |title=A Glossary of the Tribes & Castes of the Punjab & North-west Frontier Province: Based on the Census Report for the Punjab, 1883, by the Late Sir Denzil Ibbetson ... & the Census Report for the Punjab, 1892, by Sir Edward Maclagan ... & Comp. by H.A. == Earliest mentions ==
The earliest mention of the Lohani tribes comes in the form of an inscription written on a tablet from 1496 AD in [[Bihar]] during the days of the [[Lodi dynasty]].<ref>{{Cite book |last=Siddiqi |first=Jamal Siddiqi |url=https://indianculture.gov.in/ebooks/epigraphia-indica-arabic-and-persian-supplement-continuation-series-epigraphia-indo-1 |title=Epigraphia Indica: Arabic and Persian Supplement (In Continuation of the Series Epigraphia Indo-Moslemica) |publisher=Archaeological Survey of India |year=1967 |location=Delhi |pages=172}}</ref> The inscription records the construction of a certain gate by Darya Khan Nuhani who is thereafter mentioned as one of the <nowiki>''</nowiki>governors of the kingdom". The Lohani tribes were also mentioned by the Mughal Emperor [[Babur]] in his memoirs, the [[Baburnama]], as '''Nuhani Afghans''' around 1529 AD.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Annette |first=Beveridge |url=https://ia902606.us.archive.org/4/items/baburnama017152mbp/baburnama017152mbp.pdf |title=Baburnama: A Memoir |isbn=978-8129141750 |pages=24}}</ref> It is interesting to note that the earliest records mentions them as ''Nuhani'' rather than ''Lohani'', which is the primary designation by which they are currently known today.
