Plot
A talented-but-troubled rugby player Rick Penning (played by Sean Faris) who loses his position as the star of an Arizona rugby team after he was sentanced to a boy's home in Salt Lake City.[1] Rick finds himself playing again in the national championships - against his old team which is coached by his father Neal Penning (played by Neal McDonough). Larry Gelwix (played by Gary Cole) is the coach of the Salt Lake team which Rick is with. Emily (played by Arielle Kebbel) is Rick's love interest, and Marcus (played by Sean Astin) is a social worker.[2][3]
Production
Filming took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sean Faris was apparently running six miles twice a day to get in shape for the rugby.[4] One day of filming, Faris sprained his ankle.[4] The ankle was wrapped. Several All-American Rugby players added their talents to this film. They were predominantly from the National Runner-Up BYU Rugby Club. Filming began in August of 2006. Locations for filming took place at around three high schools.[5]
Forever Strong is based on true stories about a high school rugby team, Highland Rugby, which is the inspiration for the film.[5] Rick Penning is based on a real member of the rugby team who played in Flagstaff, Arizona who was sent to a group home for troubled youth in Salt Lake City.[5] The Salt Lake team coach (Larry Gelwix) and the team dominated the sport for three decades.[6] The production company Go Films decided to make a film about the legacy of the team and coach.[5] "Forever Strong" is one of the team mottos of the high school team the film is based on.[7]
