The Vongola Family (ボンゴレファミリー, Bongore Famirī), or Vongola Famiglia ("Vongola" means "clam", and "Famiglia" means "family" in Italian), is a fictional Mafia family in the anime and manga series Reborn!. The Vongola Family is the first Mafia family introduced in the series since the main character, Tsunayoshi Sawada, is being groomed to be the Vongola's tenth generation boss. The Vongolas have held the status as the leading Mafia family in the series, and is considered to be the strongest and most influential family since the beginning of the Mafia underground. It is only until the Millefiore Family appears in the Future arc that they are overtaken during a Mafia war in an alternate future.
Early History
Not much is known about the Vongola Family's history, other than it is considered to be a violent and bloody one.[1] Also, the first Vongola head, Giotto, started the organization 400 years prior to the start of the series. Since then, the Vongola Family has the held the status as the leading Mafia family, having dozens of other families working for them.
Traditions
Vongola Rings
Seven invaluable rings worn by the seven core members of the Vongola Family. During every new generation, the rings are passed on to the seven next worthy members of the family, proving they belong to the Vongola family.
Both halves of the Ring of the Sky.During the 10th generation, each of the rings were shown to have been split in half for the 2 groups (Tsuna's family and the Varia; 14 people). Each person who wore half a ring were to battle the opposing member, who wore the corresponding half, in order to become a core member.
The characteristics of the first Vongola members are carved into the rings:
(W) = winner
Ring of the Sky: Worn by the Vongola Boss. The sky; one that colors and engulfs everything. Battle: Tsuna (W) vs. Xanxus
The remaining six rings were portrayed with different kinds of weather that affected the sky:
Ring of Rain: The rain; one that washes away everything. Battle: Takeshi (W) vs. Squalo Ring of Storm: The wind; one that fiercely blows away everything. Battle: Hayato vs. Belphegor (W)
Ring of Cloud: The floating cloud; one that cannot be caught and goes its own way. Battle: Kyoya (W) vs. Gola Mosca
Ring of the Sun: The sun; one that illuminates the sky. Battle: Ryohei (W) vs. Lussuria
Ring of Mist: The illusion; one that cannot be captured. Battle: Chrome (W) vs. Marmon
Ring of Thunder: The lightning; one that harshly strikes everything. Battle: Lambo vs. Leviathan (W)
By the end of the Vongola Tournament arc, all the rings were in the possession of Tsuna's Family. During the Future arc, it is revealed that the adult Tsuna had destroyed the Vongola Rings; the real reason as to why he did it is unknown, but they speculate that he did it in order to prevent further bloodshed. In the same arc, it is revealed that the rings are capable of emitting a Dying Will Flame, and each ring can also transform into a type of weapon when used with a special box.
Besides the seven main rings, there are several miscellaneous rings which possess different abilities. Each ring can be categorized into one of the main Vongola Rings (i.e. Ring A is a Sky type, Ring B is a Rain type, Ring C is a Storm type, etc.). Each ring also has a purity grade (the highest being A, however, the main rings have a purity grade of above A, just like the Arcobaleno's pacifiers) in order to determine the power of the ring: the lower the grade, the weaker the power of the ring. The rings also have different flame colors, each one corresponding with the original flame colors of the main rings.

Mafia wars
Members
Vongola bosses
Giotto a.k.a. Vongola I
The first head of the Vongola Family. He started the Vongola Family 400 years before the start of the story. He and Tsuna both use gloves as their primary weapon. He is shown in chapter 158, along with the rest of the former Vongola heads. His appearance is similar to Tsuna's.
Vongola II
The second head of the Vongola Family. He first appeared in chapter 158 in the imaginary dimension where the previous Vongola heads gathered. He has a power known as the "Flame of Anger", (similar to Xanxus, who coincidentally looks similar in appearance also).
Vongola III
The third head of the Vongola Family. His first main appearance is in chapter 158. He uses knives to fight.
Vongola IV
The fourth head of the Vongola Family. His first appearance is in chapter 158. His main weapon of choice is a fork.
Vongola V
The fifth head of the Vongola Family. His first appearance is in chapter 158. He has a center-parting hairstyle and resembles Hayato. He is seen to be holding an unknown flaming weapon.
Simora a.k.a. Vongala VI
The sixth head of the Vongola Family. His first appearance is in Chapter 158. Other than wearing a monocle and holding a flaming weapon (possibly a boomerang) with decorative carvings, not much is known about him.
Fabio a.k.a. Vongola VII
The seventh head of the Vongola Family. His flame was considered to be weak in terms of the other heads. In order to counter that weakness, he used guns that focused his flame as his primary weapon. Although he had a weak flame, his mastery of marksmanship gave him one of the highest attacks in all of the Vongola heads. He appears in chapter 158, donning a fedora.
Daniela a.k.a. Vongola VIII
The eighth and only known female head of the Vongola Family. She first appeared in chapter 158, and is shown with a flowery tattoo on her face. She is shown with an unknown flaming weapon.
Timoteo a.k.a. Vongola IX
The current head of the Vongola crime family.
The Vongola IX's stamp is the Dying Will Flame; he marks documents with his flame, proving they are official.
He initially accepted Iemitsu's son, Tsuna, as the next head of the Vongola Family, but soon changed his mind and decided that his son, Xanxus, was more worthy to become the next boss. Since Iemitsu wants Tsuna to become the 10th boss, the IX sanctioned the traditional Vongola battle; those who wield the same ring will have a one-on-one battle.
It was later revealed that he was not the one that sanctioned the battle, but a fake IX that Xanxus had appointed. When Xanxus found out that the real IX would not appoint him as the next boss, he kidnapped the IX and placed him within Gola Mosca's armor, draining him of his life energy. When Tsuna sliced Gola Mosca's armor in half, an extremely weakened IX was revealed to be inside. Before passing out, he was able to use his flame to show Tsuna his past; the IX used to visit Tsuna when he was just a child.
In the Future arc, he has been unaccounted for since the Millefiore Family raided the main Vongola headquarters. During Tsuna's training within Kyoya's spiked ball, he appears in a vision with the other Vongola heads and is shown with a flaming scepter, indicating that it may be his signature weapon.
CEDEF
Iemitsu Sawada
Sawada Iemitsu (沢田 家光)
Tsuna's father, who suppossedly works at oil fields, rarely sees his family. Iemitsu is the great-great grandson of the first Vongola boss. Tsuna believes him to be a loser father who has nothing to do with the Mafia, but Iemitsu is actually a crucial member of the Mafia. Though not officially part of the Vongola family, he is the "Outside Advisor" (CEDEF), which is the second highest position, second only to the boss, when family crises arise. After Vongola IX chose Xanxus as his successor, Iemitsu, who wants Tsuna to become the next boss, protested. He traveled around the world while he waited for the 9th's reply.
He returned to Japan with Dino and brought with him the real halves of the Vongola rings. Since he did not want anyone to know he was bringing the real halves, he instructed Basil, his subordinate and disciple, to bring the fake halves to Tsuna (though Basil did not know they were fake), in order to use him as a decoy. Even though he used him as a decoy, both Reborn and Dino believed that it was the right decision. Still, Basil remained loyal to him.
During Tsuna and his family's training, Iemitsu secretly watched over each one of them. During the battle for the Vongola rings, Iemitsu believed that the IX was dead. He went to Italy with his subordinates to verify his suspicions. When he supposedly found the IX, it was revealed that it was a fake IX.
In the Future arc, Iemitsu and his wife is currently on vacation in Italy.
Iemitsu usually carries a pickaxe around.
Oregano
Oregano (オレガノ)
One of Iemitsu's subordinates in Italy. She goes with Iemitsu, Termuric, Moretti, and Lal Mirch to check and see if the 9th Vongola boss is still alive.
Basil
Bajiru (バジル), Seiyū - Yuka Terasaki
A boy who can control the Dying Will Flame, though Basil's flame is blue. He can go into dying will mode when he consumes special pills made by his master, who happens to be Tsuna's father, Iemitsu. Due to being strictly trained since early childhood, he is a very talented fighter. Basil has a habit of speaking in an archaic manner; usually replacing his 'you', 'the', and 'I', with 'thou', 'thee', and 'thy'. He is Iemitsu's disciple and subordinate.
Unbeknownst to Basil, in order for Iemistu to safely deliver the real halves of the Vongola rings to Japan, he was sent to deliver the fake Vongola Rings to Tsuna. During this, he encountered a member of the Varia, Superbi Squalo, who believed the rings were real and wanted to obtain them, thus Basil was subsequently beat. Even though he was used as a decoy, he remains extremely loyal to Iemitsu. He would later help train Tsuna in order to help him control the Dying Will Flame.
After the Vongola Tournament arc, before he left for Italy, Basil gave Tsuna a bottle of pills that, when swallowed, achieves the same effect as that of the Rebuke Bullet.
Lal Mirch
Raru Miruchi (ラル・ミルチ)
A female member of the Arcobaleno, who considers herself as one of the weakest members. Although she assists Reborn's team in current time, she ends up as a major ally for Tsuna after he and Reborn are sent nine years and ten months into the future through Lambo's "Ten-Year Bazooka". Since the rest of the Arcobaleno are dead in the future, Lal continues to age, and also suffers from an illness due to a "defect" and overexposure to the Negative Seven Rays. She is also part of the Vongola's CEDEF, or Outside Advisors.
At first, she planned to attempt Byakuran's assassination alone, but is later convinced by Reborn to train Tsuna, Hayato, and Takeshi. As their instructor, she is very tough; she blatantly ignored Lambo's existence, and is so strict as to send Takeshi and Tsuna flying with a punch because Takeshi could not understand what she was saying and Tsuna could not use the ring.
According to Reborn, she shows her emotions easily and is very readable. In chapter 147 of the manga, it was revealed that Lal Mirch was Colonello's former instructor in the COMSUBIN.
The Varia
The Varia is supposedly the Vongola Family's elite, independent assassination team. They are composed of genius assassins who work in the deepest recesses of the Mafia. Each member takes on missions that are said to be impossible to accomplish by humans. Those that see them work often say that their high level assassination skills are demonic. They are extremely loyal to each other, especially to their leader Xanxus. Previously, the Varia would never reveal themselves, but, according to Reborn, the group became restless after a certain man disappeared. Each member of the Varia wears half of a Vongola ring.
Xanxus
Zanzasu (ザンザス, can also be romanized as XANXUS)
Leader of the Varia and Vongola IX's son. He is both respected and feared by his subordinates; after Squalo failed to bring him the real halves of the Vongola rings, he smashed Squalo's face into the table. In order to retrieve the real rings, he went to Japan, to kill Tsuna and his 'family'.
Being the leader of the Varia, Xanxus is presumably extremely powerful; during the confrontation with Tsuna, Xanxus was about to perform a move that his subordinates claimed would kill them all, that is until Iemitsu arrived to stop him. He apparently has a strong dislike for Iemitsu.
Xanxus' past was revealed by Squalo. Apparently when Xanxus was a young child he was already able to use the Dying Will Flame. However, he was not born to the Vongola family (even so, Xanxus still had an intuition that rivaled that of one who did possess the bloodline), but instead his mother seemed to be an ordinary citizen in Italy who went delusional when she saw his flames, believing that he was the IX's child when he really was not. Xanxus was taken in by the IX, and loved him as if he really was the IX's real son. He became spoiled and grew to have a terrible temper. When Xanxus found out that he was not the IX's son, and that someone without the Vongola bloodline cannot become the next boss, he started hating the IX and began to plot his downfall.
After realizing that the ninth Vongola boss was going to appoint Tsuna as the next boss, he went berserk and planned to get rid of the IX. Long before the tournament against Tsuna, he had placed the IX within Gola Mosca's armor, in order for him to weaken the IX. When Tsuna destroys Gola Mosca, he blames him for killing the IX, and pretends to avenge him. Early on, during the tournament to determine the bearer of the rings, Tsuna was disqualified for saving Lambo, thus relinquishing his rights for the Ring of the Sky to Xanxus. Although, later on, Tsuna defeats Xanxus in battle and earns his place as the rightful bearer for the Ring of the Sky and as leader of the Vongola Family. It is also revealed that Xanxus has a power known as the "Flame of Anger", which originates from the second Vongola boss, whom Xanxus surprisingly resembles.
Superbi Squalo
Superubi Sukuāro (スペルビ スクアーロ), Seiyū - Hiroki Takahashi
Squalo was sent to Japan to steal the Vongola rings. In the process, he encountered Basil, wondering why the boy was sent to Japan. Believing Basil had the real halves of the Vongola rings, he had a long battle with him until encountering Tsuna and his family. He easily defeated Basil, Tsuna, Hayato, and Takeshi. He decided to flee after "Bucking-Horse Dino" came to Tsuna's rescue, but only after obtaining the halves of the Vongola rings, which he believed to be real. Squalo expected to be praised by Xanxus since he delivered the rings to him, but instead was smashed into the table by him since he delivered fake rings. He became outraged and has since held a grudge against Tsuna and his family.
He was one of the first people that Xanxus had recruited. Squalo has a high respect for Xanxus.
During the Vongola Tournament arc, he became the holder of the Ring of Rain, thus battling Takeshi in an area with water. Based on their first encounter, Squalo expected to win easily, however, Takeshi reveals the sword techniques he learned from his father. Through determination, Takeshi wins in the end and becomes the rightful holder of the Ring of Rain.
Lussuria
Russūria (ルッスーリア)
A candidate of the holder of the Ring of the Sun. Uses Muay Thai as his preferred fighting style and wears a metallic kneepad for defence. He fought Ryohei in a brightly illuminated boxing ring that affected his vision (Lussuria had the early advantage in the fight by wearing shades), but subsequently lost with Ryohei attacking and breaking his kneepad. He was finished off by Gola Mosca, as he was simply "erasing the weak". He acts as the most feminine of the group and sweet talks Ryohei mostly to taunt him. Belphegor calls him a pervert.
Leviathan
Reviatan (レヴィアタン)
The captain of the attack team that was sent by Xanxus to retrieve the rings from Tsuna and his family. It is said that his speed in accomplishing his work is the best in the Varia. He is also extremely loyal to Xanxus and does not care about promotions.
He was chosen as the holder of the Ring of Thunder, thus battling Lambo on Namimori High's roof, which was reconstructed into an arena containing satellite dishes that could discharge high amounts of electricity. Though Leviathan had no problem defeating the 5-year-old and 15-year-old Lambos, he did have a bit of difficulty with the 25-year-old Lambo. Even so, Lambo could not hold out in the end and reverted back to his 5-year-old self. As Leviathan prepared to deliver the final blow to the now unconscious Lambo, Tsuna, with his Hyper Dying Will, saves him in the last second. Although, since Tsuna intervened, Leviathan won the right to Ring of Thunder, and Xanxus also won the right to the Ring of the Sky.
Belphegor
Berufegōru (ベルフェゴール)
Nicknamed Bel or "Prince the Ripper", Belphegor competes with Hayato Gokudera to be the rightful holder of the Ring of Storm in the hallway of Namimori High. It is stated several times that he's believed to be the 'genius' of the Varia, displaying both combat and tactical skills. Knives and wires are his choice of weapons. He is said to root from a royal family. Belphegor murdered his brother when he was young, stating he "mistook him for a cockroach." Upon seeing his own blood, Bel's power surges because it reminds him of the thrill of killing his brother.
Gola Mosca
Gōra Mosuka (ゴーラ•モスカ)
Gola Mosca is a killing machine powered by the life of a human. It wore the Ring of Cloud, and therefore it battled Kyoya, but Kyoya easily defeated it with one strike. After their battle, it tried to shoot Kyoya, who was distracted with his fight against Xanxus, with missiles until Tsuna used his flame to block the attack. When Tsuna sliced it in half, it was revealed to have been powered by the ninth Vongola boss. The IX was badly wounded, but was able to survive.
Tsuna's Family (Seven Guardians)
Others
Reborn
Ribōn (リボーン), Seiyū - Neeko
Holder of the Yellow pacifier.
The infant hitman, who becomes Tsuna's home tutor, and drags him into becoming a mob boss. The current head of the Vongola family sent Reborn to train Tsuna. He is Vongola IX's most trusted hitman. Despite being a mere one year old infant, he behaves as a seasoned mafioso.
When at Tsuna's school, Reborn usually hides in the fire extinguisher cabinet, but has several other hidden compartments all around town. Reborn often says "Ciao-su" (a mix of the Italian "ciao" and the Japanese "osu", which is a casual male greeting equivalent to the English "Yo!" or "Wassup!"). He appears to see nothing unusual in any of his own behavior and has an unlimited supply of various clothing.
Since he is an official member of the Vongola Family, other than to shoot special bullets, he is not allowed to directly interfere with most of Tsuna's battles, since they are usually against other Vongola members. He is however allowed to defend against attacks directed solely at him, first shown when he was attacked by Kyoya.
- Leon (レオン, Reon) - Reborn's chameleon companion, who sits on Reborn's fedora. He can change shape and color as per Reborn's desire, provided he is familiar with the object he will turn into and the object is roughly his size. The bullets used by Reborn are created inside Leon. When his tail falls off, his shape-shifting abilities becomes unstable and is no longer able to create bullets. Although, his tail falling off is a sign that Reborn's student is gradually progressing. After this stage, Leon will create special items for the student, then return to his normal self (For Dino, Leon created Enzio and a whip; for Tsuna, Leon created the Rebuke Bullet and the X-Gloves).
Moretti
Moretti (モレッティ)
A young operative for the Vongola Family. He first meets Tsuna and Reborn when pretending to be a burglar. Reborn later tells Tsuna that he is a "heart-stopper", meaning he can stop his heart at any given time, making it look like he was dead. He tells Tsuna that everything, including the gun shot wound to his burglary antics, were all made up. This makes Tsuna and Haru at first assume that he was dead and a zombie.
