Conor is an Irish male first name that may have been derived either from the Irish name Conchubhair. The name "Conchobhar" literally translates as "Consciousness like a Barr (top of a hill or a hill fort) (in modern spelling Conchúr or Cnochúr), meaning "like a hound" or "new hill") or from the name "Conaire", found in Irish legend as the name of the high king Conaire Már and other heroes. Conor has recently become a popular name in North America and in Great Britain, but, outside Ireland, the name is often spelled Connor, traditionally the spelling of the surname (Irish Ó Conchúir).
"Conor" is literally also the first person deponent Latin verb meaning "I try."
