The Covenant of the League of Nations was the treaty that established this predecessor to the United Nations. The UN Charter is essentially a strengthened version of the Covenant, with many parallel provisions and structures[1]. The treaty entered into force on January 10, 1920. The following amendments were made to the Covenant:

  • Article 6 was amended on August 13, 1924
  • Articles 12, 13 and 15 were amended on Sept. 26, 1924
  • Article 4 was amended on July 19, 1926.

Article 20 established the Covenant's supremacy over all other international treaties entered into by its members:

The Members of the League severally agree that this Covenant is accepted as abrogating all obligations or understandings inter se which are inconsistent with the terms thereof, and solemnly undertake that they will not hereafter enter into any engagements inconsistent with the terms thereof. In case any Member of the League shall, before becoming a Member of the League, have undertaken any obligations inconsistent with the terms of this Covenant, it shall be the duty of such Member to take immediate steps to procure its release from such obligations.
