blinkx.com (London AIM:BLNX.L) is an Internet search engine for video and audio content, based in San Francisco, that allows searching and classification of audio files, video clips and streaming media. Blinkx’s video search engine differs by using speech recognition to listen to the audio component of the video content, and then uses both the phonetic and text transcripts to match content with search queries. blinkx also indexes and searches podcasts and video blogs. It claims to be the largest deep indexed Video search engine with 18 million hours indexed and agreements with over 130 content companies.

History

  • In 2003, Suranga Chandratillake, a Sri Lankan and former Autonomy Corporation employee, founded blinkx as a toolbar for web search, specializing in video.[1], .
  • In October 2006, Microsoft Corp. agreed to have an option to use Blinkx technology to power the video search on some parts of its MSN service and Live.com.[2] Other sites it powers include Lycos, Infospace and parts of AOL.
  • On April 25, 2007, Autonomy announced it had exercised its option to buy 90% of Blinkx' shares which it held in exchange for licensing Blinkx its search technologies. Autonomy would combine it with its own consumer division. The new entity was to be renamed Blinkx and was to be demerged and it intended to IPO the combined entities on the UK's AIM as blinkx plc. It further announced Blinkx would raise $50M. It is valued at over $250M. (Jun 07) [3][4]
  • On May 22, 2007, Blinkx de-merged from Autonomy and was listed on the London Alternative Investment Market as BLNX.L. Share prices were forecasted to run between 35–45 pence. Blinkx's initial share price ran at 45 pence and rose 40% during the course of the trading day, ending at 63 pence. This resulted in the 2nd highest trading day for an IPO in London over the last 2 years.[5]
  • On June 3rd it announced it was also powering video search on Ask.com.
  • On June 22nd blinkx announced that it is going to power the next version of Real Player.
