Be Kind Rewind is a 2008 American comedy film directed by Michel Gondry and starring Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, and Mia Farrow. The film premiered January 20, 2008 at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. It was later shown at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film opened February 22, 2008 in the United Kingdom and the United States.[1]

The title is a reference to a phrase commonly displayed on VHS rental tapes during the medium's era.[2]

Plot

Jerry (Jack Black) is a junkyard worker who attempts to sabotage a power plant that he believes is melting his brain. But when his plan goes awry, the magnetic field that he creates accidentally erases all of the videotapes in a local video store where his best friend Mike (Mos Def) works.

Fearing that the mishap will cost Mike his job, the two friends team up to keep the store's only loyal customer, a little old lady with a tenuous grasp on reality (Mia Farrow) from realizing what has happened by recreating and re-filming every movie that she decides to rent. Jerry and Mike become the biggest stars in their neighborhood by starring in some of the biggest movies ever made, but soon get into trouble when it turns out their 20-minute duplicate films violate copyright law.

"Sweding"

The process of Mike and Jerry's efforts to recreate their erased videos is described as sweding in the film, and to do so is referred to as to swede a film. The tapes are described as having come from Sweden as an excuse for higher rental fees and longer wait times.

In light of the theme of sweding, director Michel Gondry swedes a version of the trailer of the film, starring all the characters as themselves. On the official website, users can engage in sweding, which puts their faces on the VHS cover of a movie.[3] The Be Kind Rewind YouTube minisite also encourages filmmakers to swede their own versions of popular movies.[4]

Production

Filming of Be Kind Rewind took place over several weeks in the fall of 2006 largely in and around Passaic, New Jersey.

The plot of Be Kind Rewind is nearly identical to a recurring sketch, "Blockblister", in the 90s Nickelodeon program The Amanda Show, leading to accusations of plagiarism.[5] Gondry claims he had the concept of "this kid who would remake these movies" for "years".[6]

Cast

Critical reception

The film received generally favorable to mixed reviews from critics. As of February 22, 2008, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 68% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 90 reviews.[7] Metacritic reported the film had an average score of 53 out of 100, based on 30 reviews.[8]
