Desmond Lamont Bishop (born July 24, 1984 in San Francisco, California) is an American football linebacker for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League. He attended Cal for college. Before that he attended San Francisco City College where he was a JUCO All-American Linebacker.

He was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. While in college he was a three time All-American, once at San Fransico City College, and twice at Cal.

High school career

Bishop attended Fairfield High School in Fairfield, California. While at Fairfield he earned Second-Team All-State from Calhisports.com. He played in the California North-South Shrine All-Star Game as a senior in 2002. Bishop also played fullback and linebacker. He also lettered in basketball.

College career

While in college Bishop majored in interdisciplinary studies.

San Fransico City College (2003-2004)

At San Fransico City College, Bishop was a two time letterman (2003 and 2004). He was also a teammate of current Cal quarterback Joe Ayoob. Bishop was ranked by SuperPrep as the fourth-best community college player in the nation and was voted California's 2004 Junior College Defensive Player of the Year by the JC Athletic Bureau/California Community College Football Coaches Association. He was named the Northern California Conference Defensive Most Valuable Player. Bishop was a First-team JC Gridwire All-American, averaging almost 12 tackles per game with 118 in 10 regular-season games in 2004. In the California's state championship game Bishop had 14 tackles (including eight), one sack and two tackles for loss against the College of the Canyon. He also played on SFCC undefeated (13-0) team that won the national championship in 2003.

Cal (2005-2006)

2005

Bishop immediately won a starting job upon his arrival at Cal and picked up Second-Team All-Pac 10 honors. he started all 12 games at middle linebacker and led the team with 89 tackles (62 solo), with six for loss, one quarterback pressure, one forced fumble, and two pass deflections. He made his Cal debut with seven solo tackles against Sacramento State. Bishop psted the first of seven double-digit tackle performances in his two years at Cal with 11 tackles (eight solo) against Illinois. He had two tackles for loss at Oregon. Bishop recorded 12 tackles, including a career-high 11 solo, against USC. He ended the season with eight tackles (six solo), a pass break-up and a tackle for loss against BYU in the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl.

2006

In 2006, Bishop started all 13 games and was a Third-team All-American choice by Rivals.com, earning honorable mention from The NFL Draft Report, and being placed on the Butkus Award watchlist.^[1] He won All-Pac 10 First-Team accolades, leading the conference in tackles and leading his team for the second straight year with 126 (63 solo). Bishop became the first Cal player to lead the Pac-10 in tackles (126) since Jerrott Willard posted 147 in 1993. He also had three sacks, a team-high 15 tackles for loss (fourth in Pac-10), two pass break-ups, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Bishop ranked 14th nationally, averaging 9.69 tackles per game. He had at least seven tackles in 11 of 13 games, and was in double digits five times. Bishop posted a then-career high 13 tackles against Minnesota. He had a fumble recovery to set up a TD and a sack to force a punt against Arizona State, along with nine tackles. Bishop forced a fumble that led to a TD among six tackles at Oregon State. He recorded 10 tackles (eight solo) with an interception, a sack and two tackles for loss against Oregon. In perhaps his best collegiate performance, Bishop posted a career-high 16 tackles (seven solo), with 3 ½ tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and a game-clinching interception against Washington. He recorded his third interception of the season against UCLA. Bishop then recorded his third sack of the season at Arizona. He had 13 tackles, including a season-high nine solo, with 1 ½ tackles for loss at USC. Bishop ended his career with 12 tackles (eight solo), with one for loss, in 45-10 win over Texas A&M in 2007 Holiday Bowl.

Professional career

NFL Draft

Bishop was selected in the sixth round (192nd overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He was the second of three consecutive sixth-round draft choices, and the 27th linebacker selected. He was chosen with selection from Pittsburgh acquired along with the Steelers' fourth-round pick (119) for Green Bay's fourth-round choice (112). He is a physically strong, having done 33 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at the combine, using that strength to take on a lead blocker when necessary. Bishop is the ninth player from Cal drafted by the Packers and second in three years, joining quarterback Aaron Rodgers (2005 first round).

2007

In his rookie season, Bishop played in 10 games for the Green Bay Packers. He made his NFL debut in the Packers week one win over the Philadelphia Eagles, recording his first (solo) career tackle. He recorded his second career (solo) tackle during the Week 2 win at the Giants. Bishop did not play in the next four games (five weeks including Bye Week). During the Packers Week 8 win in Denver, Bishop recorded two tackles (one solo, one assist). He then missed the next two games. Playing in every remaining game of the season, Bishop recorded stats during the Week 15 win in St. Louis, recording two solo tackles, and the Week 17 win over Detroit, recording four total tackles, three solo, one assist.

Personal life

Bishop's father Dennis played football collegiately at Illinois and professionally in the USFL.

In high school, he played against fellow Packers player Jarrett Bush, as the two were from rival schools.

Bishop along with several Cal teammates, served food to the homeless.

He enjoys reading, writing poetry, and watching movies.

Bishop currently resides in Sacramento, California.
