E=MC² is the eleventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. The album is scheduled to be released on April 15, 2008 in the United States.[5][6]

Album title

Before the confirmation of the official title, the album was planned to be named That Chick, a reference to one of the album tracks.[7] The album name means "(E) Emancipation (=)of (MC) Mariah Carey (²) to the second power".[8] It is a play on Einstein's famous mass–energy equivalence formula.[9]

Production history

Carey reportedly said she had been writing new songs while traveling on her latest tour.[10] It was reported that Carey was recording her new album and booked a whole month in Anguilla's biggest villa and had a studio built in it. Hip hop producer Bryan Michael Cox visited Anguilla and contributed four new songs to the album.[11]

At TAO's New Years party, Carey's song "Migrate", which features singer/rapper T-Pain, was played.[12]

On February 1, 2008 a video of Mariah and Jermaine Dupri during one of their late night studio recording sessions in Carey's TriBeCa triplex was posted on Mariah's official website.[13]

Announced producers and collaborators

  • Rapper T.I. was interviewed by VIBE to talk about his forthcoming album T.I. vs. T.I.P., films, and future projects. He said that he is one of the producers of one of Carey's upcoming albums.[14]
  • Hip Hop producer Polow Da Don said that he'll be working with Carey for her new album.[15]
  • Rolling Stone Magazine wrote:

Mariah Carey's last album The Emancipation of Mimi was the breakout hit of 2005 selling more than six million copies (in the U.S. alone). For the follow-up, she's hewing close to Mimi's glossy, club-ready sound, with beats from Hip Hop producers Jermaine Dupri, Stargate, Bryan Michael Cox and Will.i.am.[16]

  • Speaking at the launch of her new M fragrance in LA, she revealed:

"I am so happy with the new tracks - there are 22 that we're trying to decide from.

But the way I like to look at it is the last album was the main course,

and the new one is the dessert!"[17]

Musical content

The album's music appeals to a lot of genres such as Pop, R&B and Hip hop, but some of her songs also include Gospel and Reggae beats.[18] She experiments with reggae tones on "Cruise Control" for the first time.[7] The song "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time," samples DeBarge's "Stay with Me" and recalls the melodic riff of the "Hill Street Blues" theme music.[19] The background riffs and music (although altered) on "For the Record" was used in the promotional commercial for Carey's debut fragrance, 'M'.[20]

Critical reception

In February, The Observer previewed the album and gave it 4 out of 5 stars saying that "each track is precision-tooled to sound as if it were born to be banging out of a Hummer in Miami on a sunny Saturday" and calling her "the pack leader" of artists such as Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys.[21]

Critics also agreed that her voice is still in a good condition, Fox News and RWD stating "Her infamous eight-octave range has suffered a little wear and tear over the years, but Carey still can flutter from great highs to mellow lows like no one else"[19] and "Vocally and sonically, this is yet another outstanding release from the world's biggest selling superstar",[22] respectively.

Singles

"Touch My Body" was chosen as the lead single off the album. The single was officially released on February 19.[23] After entering the Billboard Hot 100 at #57[24], the song climbed to the top of the chart becoming Carey's 18th #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, pushing her to second place among artists with the most #1 singles in the rock era and first place as a solo artist in the same category, surpassing Elvis Presley[25]. The achievement was attributed to a record-breaking digital sales debut, as 286,000 copies were sold in its first week of availability.[25] Being a song written by Carey, it has helped her break the tie with Barry Gibb and takes the 3rd place for songwriters with most #1 hits. Only Paul McCartney with 32 and John Lennon with 26 have more.[26]

Promotion

Although Mariah's promotional schedule officially commences in April, Carey was the musical guest on the March 15 episode of Saturday Night Live and performed "Touch My Body" and "Migrate".[27] She replaced Janet Jackson, who dropped out due to being sick.[28] On March 7, she filmed a special for BET, which contained a live performance segment. She sang four songs from this album, which include "Migrate" with special guest T-Pain, "Love Story", "Touch My Body", "I'm That Chick", "We Belong Together, and "Shake it Off", two songs from her previous album. The special will air on April 16.[29] She also performed live at the The Hills premiere event on March 24, 2008. She sang three songs including "We Belong Together", "Touch My Body" and "I'm That Chick".[30].[31]. Carey performed "Touch My Body" at the German TV-show "Deutschland sucht den Superstar", the German version of "American Idol" on April 5, 2008[32]. She also appeared as a host on the Friday Night Project, where she did some skits and performed "Touch My Body",[33]. She will appear on ABC's Good Morning America[34], on The Oprah Winfrey Show to be aired April 14,she also appeared on "4 Music presents" where she sang "Bye Bye","I'm That Chick", and "Touch My Body",she also was on The Paul Ogrady show;where she performed "Touch My Body",and she will also appear on "Le Grand Journal" show which will air on April 9 on Canal+, Additional promotion includes three appearances on American Idol: Carey will attend "Idol Gives Back" on April 9, mentor the contestants on April 15 and perform on April 16.[35][36]
