EveryChild is an international development charity based in the United Kingdom[1]. EveryChild focuses on protecting vulnerable children who have been separated from their families and communities, or are at risk of being so.

Formed via a merger of the European Children’s Trust (ECT) and the Christian Children’s Fund of Great Britain (CCFGB) in 2002, today EveryChild works in 17 countries across the world.

History

EveryChild’s development can be traced back to The Romanian Orphanage Trust (TROT), established in 1990 as a result of a charity appeal on the BBC television programme Blue Peter. Having expanded its work into other countries in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, TROT was re-branded as the European Children’s Trust in 1998[2]. The ECT focused on reforming national childcare systems around families rather than institutions, and reintegrating insitutionalised children with families.

In January 2002 the ECT merged with CCFGB, an international children's charity in operation since 1983[3], to form EveryChild. The two charities had worked together previously and shared similar aims and ambitions, and as a result chose to come together as EveryChild. The geographical scope of the charity increased following the merger to include Latin America, Asia and Africa. While continuing to work with institutionalised children, EveryChild adopted a broader approach to child protection, working with street children, child labourers and other vulnerable children throughout the world.

Current Work

EveryChild's current projects include:

  • Parent and Baby Units in Ukraine for vulnerable children at risk of institutionalisation.[4]
  • Child Protection Units in Ethiopia and Malawi, operating in conjunction with the local constabulary.
  • Parenting workshops in Peru, aimed at reducing incidences of child abuse in families.
  • Drop-in Centres and Safe Homes in Ethiopia, providing refuge and rehabilitation for Ethiopia's street children.
  • Juvenile Justice advocacy and child protection in Cambodia.
  • Child Parliaments in India.
  • Deinstitutionalisation of children and public awareness-raising of children's rights issues in Moldova.
