The DOC Film Institute (DFI) is a project of the International Center for the Arts at San Francisco State University.[1] The DFI was created in 2005 to support nonfiction filmmakers and to bring their films to the attention of wider audiences.
In April 2008, the DFI premiered its first film, the documentary Cachao: Uno Más, co-produced by Andy Garcia, about famed Cuban bassist Israel Cachao Lopez, widely credited as the founder of mambo.
The DFI is led by Stephen Ujlaki, chair of the Cinema Department at San Francisco State, and Tom Luddy, co-director of Telluride Film Festival. The institute was established through the generous support of alumni George and Judy Marcus.
