Xavier Veilhan (1963, Lyon) is a French artist who lives and works in Paris. His interdisciplinary oeuvre consists of photography, sculpture, film, painting and installation art.

Biography

Veilhan studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris from 1981 to 1983. He attended classes at the Berlin University of the Arts in 1984, where he studied with Georg Baselitz and enrolled in the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques in 1989 in Paris.

Xavier Veilhan has had numerous solo exhibitions, including those at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Rose Art Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts; Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos, Spain; and Le Plein Emploi at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Strasbourg, France. Veilhan also has installed several public projects throughout France, including Le Monstre in Tours, Le Lion in Bordeaux and Les Habitants at La Cite Internationale by Renzo Piano in Lyon.

His artistic approach connects him to artists like Pierre Bismuth, Pierre Huyghe, Dominique Gonzales-Foerster and Franck Scurti who were exhibiting with him at the Fac-Simile Gallery in Milan. However he may also be linked to an older generation of artists, like Alain Sechas, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Bertrand Lavier and Daniel Buren.

Veilhan's photographs, sculptures and installations are direct evocations of generic objects in everyday life (cars, machines, animals, people) gathered in an encyclopedic world of images in which, however, nothing is treated in its true materiality or usual colors. Veilhan attempts to set up an image glossary that renders the viewer as a potential narrator.
