Ashley Callie (1976 – 2008) was a South African actress best known for her role as Leone Haines in Isidingo (from 2000 to 2008). Callie died on 15 February2008 as a result of head injuries from a head-on car accident in Johannesburg, South Africa on 8 February2008.

Biography

Ashley Callie was born in Johannesburg, and received a BA Honours degree in dramatic arts from the University of the Witwatersrand.[5] Callie began her career with a role in the SABC TV production, Homeland, directed by Neil Sundstrom. Thereafter, she starred in a number of series, including Natural Rhythm. She also spent time in Cape Town, South Africa, where she starred in a number of commercials for the local South African market, as well as the overseas markets.[5]

On 2007-03-15, Callie told Lynne Gidis of Top Billing magazine that playing the role of Lee Haines on Isidingo had been a life long ambition; she had been a fan of the South African soap opera ever since it first aired in 1998. In the interview, she explained how she disliked the fame that came with her celebrity status, and how her family was an extremely important part of her life. She also explained why her character, Lee Haines, was not at all like her.[6] During that year (2007), she appeared on the cover of the magazine.[7]

Also in 2007, she played a role in a movie in Holland, which was originally to be called Surprise. However, that title has now changed to Mafrika,[8] and the producers have promised to dedicate the film to Callie's memory.[9] In addition to her role in Isidingo (which she held from 2000 until her death in 2008), Callie was co-owner of La Vista social club, in Melville, Gauteng (Johannesburg), but she sold her shares in 2007.[7]

In 2006, for her role in Isidingo, she won the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) for Best Actress, . The awards took place on 2006-10-28 at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg, South Africa. [4][10] On 2008-02-29, Callie won the Mzansi Star Actress award at the inaugural Stars of Mzansi awards ceremony, held at the South African State Theatre in Johannesburg. The award was accepted on her behalf by Robert Whitehead (who plays Barker Haines in Isidingo), and Steven Miyambo (who plays Orlando).[11][12]

After her death, South African Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Zweledinga Pallo Jordan called Callie the image of the new South Africa:[13]

We were truly blessed to have a young, gifted, South African who stretched all the sinews in her body to reflect the ideals of a united, non-racial and non-sexist society... the ministry is deeply shocked and saddened

On 2008-02-08, Callie was on her way home from the Pirelli Calendar launch in Hyde Park, when her Smart Car collided with a red Renault on the corner of 4th Avenue and Tana road (in Linden), at around 22:30 SAST.[4][14]

She was immediately rushed to the Johannesburg General Hospital, where she underwent surgery to alleviate pressure on her brain.[14] Four days later, her sister (Lauren Callie) told the media that she was said to be in a stable condition in hospital.[15][16] Shortly after, however, due to complications from her injuries, Callie died in hospital.[3]

Memorial service

A memorial service for Callie was held on 2008-02-21, at the Johannesburg Country Club.[17][18] At the service, Callie was described as both radiant and charming, and the ceremony itself was described as a celebration of Callie's life:[19][20]

We are not going to beat our breasts or don sack cloths and ashes. We are here to celebrate Ashley's life, and what a life it was.

Isidingo footage

Callie's character, Lee Haines, continued to be portrayed on screen all the way through February and March 2008, due to the fact that Endemol, the production company behind the soapie, still had footage of the actress. However, the character was written out of the show at the end of March 2008, following a statement released by the company. Haines disappeared from the show after learning of her mother's death. She then mysteriously died while away, although it was not revealed how.[21]

Investigations and allegations

Shortly after her death, Johannesburg Metro Police released a statement, speculating that Callie might have been to blame for the accident. According to the statement, Callie was driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred. It was further speculated that she had been drinking prior to the accident.[citation needed] However, according to Johannesburg metro spokesperson Edna Mamonya, neither driver's blood was tested for alcohol at the time of the incident.[22]

In support of the allegations that Callie may have been under the influence of alcohol, one of the victims of the accident in which Callie died posted a message on her memorial site:[23]

because of you i cry myself to sleep every night and pray that my best friend will come back to me and that she can overcome the brain damage you gave her and the pain that she is in. you didn’t deserve to die because you should be here to see the effects of your drunk driving. i wish you could see me try and walk with all the metal in my leg. i wish you could see my scars. i wish you were there when i underwent all my blood transfusions. i’m sorry you died but i find it hard to forgive you for the pain you have caused caused.

On 2008-08-28, Nico Pretorius (21), the driver of the other car involved in the accident, appeared in the Randburg magistrate's court. He was charged with culpable homicide, and reckless and negligent driving.[24] Pretorius was driving the Renault that collided with Callie's car, causing her death. Sources describe the charge as a "triple-whammy" for Nico and his family; his father committed suicide a month after the accident, and his mother had an accident of her own in April 2008. The charges came as a shock for the Pretorius family, who were expecting "just a hearing".[25]

Pretorius had 5 friends with him in the car at the time of the accident. Ms Arnel du preez, senior state prosecutor, said that the state had an eye-witness, who said that they had seen the events that had transpired on the day of the accident. The case was postponed to 2008-10-03, in order to give Pretorius time to obtain legal representation.[26]

On 2008-10-03, Pretorius appeared in court with his attorney, Ronald Lotz. The case was postponed again, this time to 2008-11-20. Lotz requested time to appoint an expert to review the docket.[27]
