Central United Methodist Church is the first Protestant church in the Philippines, located at T.M. Kalaw, Ermita, Manila. It was founded on March 5, 1899 during the American occupation of the country. It was named Central Methodist Episcopal Church, but was eventually called Central United Methodist Church (CUMC).

History

Central United Methodist Church' history is closely intertwined with that of Knox United Methodist Church mainly because the two churches were the result of Filipino-American ties during the surrender of Manila in 1898. Thereafter, the first Protestant worship service in the Philippines was held on 28 August 1898 and was officiated by Rev. George C. Stull. The service was attended by both American soldiers and Filipino civilians.

During the Philippine-U.S. War, the congregation separated with the American component who transferred its services to the YMCA and was organized in 1899.

During the liberation of Manila in 1945, Central UMC was severely damaged and the structure can no longer be used. Its congregation again reunited with Knox UMC until 1949 when Central UMC was rebuilt in its original site at T.M. Kalaw, Manila. Since then, the membership of Central UMC grew rapidly from a largely American congregation to a mixture of Filipinos and Americans.

Location

Central UMC is located in T.M. Kalaw Avenue corner Taft Avenue, Manila, infront of the Department of Tourism (DOT) building.
