theHunter is a free to play PC game that recreates hunting in as realistic a manner as possible.
The game features four types of animal to hunt and a variety of weapons and lures with which to hunt them with and is set on an open world Island, based on the islands and surrounds of Washington State.

The player must first create a character on the game's website www.thehunter.com which includes social networking tools and messaging capabilities to allow players to connect and share their in game experiences.

Creating a character requires selecting an avatar from pool of thousands of unique faces. Random name generation also features, while the player may give their character a nickname that they're typically be known by on the website.
Once a character is created the player receives missions intially from 'Colton Locke' a character in theHunter's gameworld. Completing missions unlocks further missions, and introduces the player to other characters that inhabit the gameworld.

The Hunter aims to recreate the stealth and tactics of actual hunting instead of putting you in quick time events where you power bomb a grizzly bear.[1]. Players must use cover to avoid detection by the animals in the game. Whitetail and Mule Deer, Roosevelt Elk and Turkey are the four species that may be hunted, and each one will react to different stimuli in different ways. Scent detection for the quadrupeds is their keenest sense, which means the player has to be aware of wind direction or the animal might smell the player's scent and run off.

The core gameplay revolves around harvesting (killing) animals with the weapons provided. Animal tracks can be found and identified with the "Huntermate" an ingame GPS device that identifies tracks, scat, blood trails, and animal calls and grunts.

theHunter also features RPG elements. As players track and spot each animal their skill in that area improves. Weapon skills can also be improved by scoring successful hits on animals. Improving the hunting skills makes animals easier to track and a weapon will not suffer as much "wobble" when aimed.

Skills, missions, and hunting statistics are displayed on the player's profile page on the website they cannot be seen while hunting in the game client.

Avalanche wants to deliver a beautiful hunting playground, keep track of progress with persistent statistics, encourage social interaction, and build community through the website used to launch the game. It's an approach that makes sense, and an approach that looks very much to be on the right track.[2]

Reception

theHunter garnered positive reviews over it's launch period. The hunting community were impressed by the game and embraced it for it's realism.
