Maharaja Agrasen College is a premier college of Delhi University, located in Mayur Vihar in the fast developing East Delhi area of the National Capital Region of Delhi.

Background

Maharaja Agrasen College has been serving the cause of higher education for almost fifteen years now. Established in 1994 with the objective of catering to the educational requirements of the densely populated East Delhi area, it is today attracting discerning students who value discipline and hard work. The college has indeed made East Delhi educationally self reliant as students today prefer to join this college rather than go all the way to distant colleges in search for quality education. The college is fully funded by the Govt. of NCT of Delhi. Though the college is presently housed in a temporary building, it has valuable infrastructural assets like a computer centre, fully computerized Library, well equipped laboratories, state - of - the - art conference hall etc. The college has a 10 acre plot in Vasundhara Enclave for construction of its permanent building. The Govt. of NCT of Delhi has taken a keen interest in sanctioning multi-crore building project which is likely to be completed in June 2010 and college will begin the academic session 2010-11 in the new building. The Governing Body of the college comprises of eminent personalities from different walks of life. Mr. A.R. Verma, distinguished social worker and former Mayor of Delhi is the Chairman of the Governing Body. Along with his colleagues he has rendered invaluable guidance and support towards realization of the progressive vision for the college

In the academic session 2008-2009, 1154 students were enrolled in 10 job oriented courses of this college. At present, a committed teaching faculty of 82 members is engaged in the task of providing meaningful classroom and extra-curricular education. It is supported by an administrative staff of 42 persons industriously working in various departments of the college. The institution has been providing university toppers consistently for the past several years.

Academics are naturally the top priority of this institution but the college lays equal emphasis on co curricular and extra curricular activities. The extra curricular front of the college is an especially vibrant and creative territory, organizing events like the Fresher's Day, Independence Day, Annual Cultural Festival - 'Yuvaan', Annual Day and the Farewell. The college has surged ahead in the other important area of co-curricular activities as well.

To conjugate the healthy mind with a healthy body, due emphasis is laid on sports as well, by organizing the Annual Sports Day on the lush grounds of the College new site at Vasundhara Enclave. Throughout the year, students participate in Inter-college sports activities. The NCC Cadets of our college play their own vital part in bringing laurels to the college by participating in camps and other invigorating activities. The institution believes in continuous intellectual refinement not only for the students but also for the teachers. It extends maximum co-operation towards enhancing professional prospects of teachers who regularly participate in refresher and orientation courses, seminars, conferences etc. Every year the college brings out its annual magazine 'Agranika' which carries a variety of articles, features, poems, illustrations on many thought-provoking issues pertaining to the contemporary mind. The college also publishes its own interdisciplinary journal ‘The Indian Journal of Social Enquiry’ which carries research based and peer reviewed articles.

The University has affected major revisions and restructuring for enhancing the profile of various courses. The college is in tune with the process of academic make-over in the University, arranging for the necessary infrastructure and human resource. The college has successfully touched the lives of many ambitious and industrious students and hopes that the three years of students enrolled with us will prove rewarding and fruitful.

The College started with two courses – B.Com. (Hons.) and B.A. (Pass). The College currently offers ten courses (enumerated below) and has about 1000 students on its rolls.

In the last few years, Maharaja Agrasen College has already earned the distinction of being the chosen destination of discerning students in search of value –added education. Apart from ensuring the basic requirements of adequate manpower and financial resources, the College has always tried its level best to provide maximum infrastructural facilities as well. As the College is housed in a temporary building, so there are some intrinsic shortcomings which the college is always trying to overcome by innovative methods. The sustained efforts of the College, the Governing Body and the Govt. of NCT of Delhi have finally borne fruit and the construction of new College building is going to commence very shortly as the contract has been awarded and all approvals have been received. The project scheduled to be completed by July 2010.

The College is going to receive 80 new computers from the University. Planning has commenced for upgrading the computing facilities of the college. An EDP cell is being created which shall function as a central data based management unit. It will provide an integrated office automation solution by installing a centralized server and networking localized computer clusters through it. The college has procured a public address system of 2000 watts RMS capacity with digital quality sound. The public address system of the Conference has also been upgraded with the purchase state-of-the-art equipment from reputed international brand – Ahuja and Studiomaster.

Add-on courses in news reading, anchoring and voice-over and cinematography offered by the college in association with HMS Films and TV Institute have enrolled their 2nd and 3rd batch and are becoming increasingly popular with our own students as well as outsiders. In collaboration with Wigan and Leigh College, the College has also made available add-on programmes in media, retail and graphic designing. The 6 Month add-on module offered by DOEACC is also running successfully in the College. We are among the few Delhi University colleges which conduct the 100 Hour bi-weekly English Language Proficiency Course – an initiative of the Institute of Life-long Learning, University of Delhi. The IGNOU study centre operating from the College offers several sought after courses.

The institution has been producing university toppers consistently for the last several years. The cultural profile of the college is comparable to the best of university colleges providing platform to home grown talent as well as eminent maestros from the world of performing and fine arts. The Extra-Curricular Committee of the College in association with students’ Culture Council organized Orientation Programme , Fresher’s Welcome, the cultural festival Yuvaan and today in the afternoon, it is organizing a Farewell for the outgoing students. Also worth mentioning are some societies of the College which have been bringing in laurels – Abhinaya, the dramatic society, Promsoc, the Choreography society and Kairan, the Fashion society. This year the student advisory committee has also established a Debating Society by the name of Chakraview. This year also, in association with SPIC – MACAY, the College played host to a number of world-renowned artists like Teejan Bai, Habib Tanvir and Sarwari Jamenis.

The Co-curricular activities keep the students intellectually charged and creatively alive. All 11 departments organized festivals as well as picnics and excursions. Department of Business Economics organized Euphony, Department. of Commerce organized Evento De Comercio, Department. of Computer Science’s annual technical festival was called ByteIT 2008, Department. of Electronics put together Electro-Zeal – 08, Department. of English organized Literati – 08, Department. of Mathematics came up with Sizzlers 08 while the Department of Political Science also contributed with a two day event – Politics 2008. Department. of English also brought out the first edition of it departmental magazine ‘The Edges’. This year the BA Programme Committee and the students inaugurated their first festival titled ‘Apoorva’ which saw extremely enthusiastic participation from the talented students of this course. The Department of Journalism issued its Newsletter ‘MACroscope’. The Journalism Coordination Committee alongwith its students core committee Tathya, organized many talks and seminars. Among the invited guests were prominent journalists, anchors and academicians like Alka Saxena, Tapan Dasgupta, Vinod Mehta, Y C Halan, Prof. Subrata Mukherjee and Prof. Ashok Tandon. A UGC sponsored National Seminar was organized under the aegis of the Department. of Physical Education focusing on ‘Recent Researches in Physical Education and Sports’. This year the College saw the founding of its Alumni Association –MACAA. It organized its first Alumni reunion which was an extremely heart- warming event for students as well as teachers.

Sports and NCC remained as eventful as ever. 18 students of the College NCC wing participated in camps and also appeared for ‘C’ Certificate examination.25 students appeared for NCC ‘B’ Certificate examination. Sports activities continued round the year culminating in the annual sports day at the new college site. This year the Adventure Club organized trekking trip to Manali and a rock climbing camp at Nooh in Haryana. The Department of Journalism organized educational tours to Nainital, Jim Corbett, Dharmshala and Manali. The Department of Political Science proceeded to Morni Hills for their educational trip while the BA Programme, Mathematical Sciences, Political Science and English students went to Damdama Lake.

The institution encourages continuous intellectual refinement for its teachers. This year also many teachers attended Refresher and Orientation courses. Dr. Sangit Kumar Ragi participated in an international conference held at Queen’s University, Belfast. Dr. Prem K Srivastava presented papers at international conference organized by All India English Teachers Conference and UGC National Conference. She also won a prize for her translation of Mahadevi Verma’s short story ‘Gillu’. Dr. Nibedita Swain from department of Biology attended ILLL workshop at Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi and UK Open University workshop on Blended Learning and International Symposium on Microbial Biotechnology organized by University of Delhi. Dr. Abha Mittal of department of Commerce presented papers at national conferences organized by Indian Commerce Association and UGC. Ms. Deepa Sharma of department of Commerce has published articles in various journals. Ms. Priyanka Katyal of Department of Commerce attended UGC sponsored national seminar on India 2050 – the Growth Potential. Dr. Natasha of Department of Electronics was appointed Supervisor of an M. Phil student and Co-Supervisor of a Ph. D student. Dr. Praveen K Pandey of Department of Electronics earned doctorate from Department of Electronic Science, University of Delhi. He also published 3 research papers in international journals. Ms Anu Jaidev of Department. of English presented a paper titled ‘The Uses of Historiography’ at UGC National Seminar, Dharamshala. Dr. Ram Kishore Yadav of Department of Hindi published a book on Audio Visual Medium and Hindi Literature. Dr. Shashi Singh from Department of Hindi brought out a book titled Bhasha Vigyan Evam Hindi Bhasha. Dr. Sushil Yadav and Dr. Awadhesh Mishra of Department of Mathematical Science participated in the conference ‘Pre ICM, International Conference on Mathematical Sciences 2008 held at University of Delhi.

Dr. Anju Aggarwal from Department of Political Science was awarded for her paper on ‘Women and Environmental Politics’ by American Political Science Organization at Georgia University. She also published a paper on ‘Globalization and Women in South Africa’ in Indian Journal of African Studies. She presented several papers in national and international seminars in African studies and was invited to speak on ‘Role of Women in Promoting Communal Harmony’ by All India Women’s Conference. Dr. Niraj Kumar of Department of Political Science published an article on ‘India: A Failed Developmental State’ in the book titled ‘Democracy, Development and Discontent in South Asia’. Dr. Subodh Kumar of Department of Political Science received a research grant from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) for the publication of his doctoral work. This year Dr. Jiran Meitei from Department of Mathematical Sciences and Ms. Deepa Sharma and Ms Sheetal Sachdev from Department of Commerce received promotion from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer while Dr. Parthasarthy and Dr. Asha Gupta of Department of Physics, Ms. Gitanjali Chawla from Department of English, Dr. Amit Pundir and Dr. Maneesha of Department of Electronics, Dr. Pratibha Rai of Department of Business Economics, Dr. Abha Mittal, Ms. Puneeta Agrawal and Mr. Arun Julka of Department of Commerce, Dr. Shankar Kumar of Department of Hindi and Dr. Prassanan of Department of Mathematics received promotions from Senior Lecturer to Reader and Reader’s Grade.
