ASUM CREST

All Saints University of Medicine - Aruba, a U.S.-based-curriculum medical school, was founded in 2002, and is located on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

Program overview

The School of Medicine enrolls classes three times a year: January, May, and September. Students complete their didactic education on the island in four semesters and upon successful completion, students move onto a pre-clinical fifth semester in the United States. After completing the 5th semester, students sit for the USMLE Step 1 exam, and then continue on in clinical clerkships at hospitals throughout the United States. Upon completion of the curriculum, similar to that of US medical schools, students must pass the USMLE Step 2 CS and USMLE Step 2 CK, prior to graduation.

Accreditation

ASUM is accredited through the Government of the Island of Aruba to confer Doctor of Medicine degrees upon successful completion of the Doctor of Medicine program. ASUM is listed with both IMED[1] and the ECFMG[2]. Graduates are able to sit for the USMLE exam. Additionally, Graduates are eligible to apply to sit for the Canadian licensing exams[3].

USMLE and residencies in United States

ECFMG Certification is required of all international medical graduates to be able to start medical residency training in the United States[4]. All Saints University's ECFMG recognition enables its graduates to be eligible for ECFMG Certification and participation in U.S. medical residency training programs[5].

Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and licensing in Canada

All Saints is recognized by the Medical Council of Canada[6]. A graduate must have passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE) and both Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Qualifying Examination Parts I and II (MCCQE) in order to apply for licensure of the Medical Council of Canada. All Saints graduates are eligible to sit for MCCEE, MCCQE Parts I and II, and apply for the licensure.

Medical curriculum

The Medical Sciences training program is delivered over four calendar years. The pre-clinical curriculum is covered over the first four semesters (16 months) in Aruba. During the last two years, which cover the clinical sciences, students move on to study at the university's affiliated hospitals in the United States.

Clinical rotations

There are 48 weeks of clinical core clerkships and 24 weeks of electives. The core clerkships are in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, family medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and psychiatry.[7]

Lab facilities

ASUM has both a on-site Necropsy Lab and a Pathology Lab.

Campus

The campus is in a dedicated series of buildings with medical library, student recreation center, and 12 lecture rooms. The current and permanent location of ASUM was built in 2006. The ASUM campus is approximately 2km from Eagle Beach.

Off-campus activities

Students have special access to local gyms, scuba diving, and windsurfing through affiliated organizations[8].

Student housing

Student housing is available off-campus in university affiliated apartment buildings[9].

Scholarships and financial aid

Five individually sponsored scholarships are available in each semester and are awarded to outstanding and deserving students upon the recommendation of the scholarship committee.[10] FAFSA financing is currently unavailable.[11].

Local hospital affiliations

Hospital in Oranjestad

The local hospital in Oranjestad, Aruba is Horacio E. Oduber Hospital. The history of our hospital goes back to 1920 when the Dominican Sisters founded the first hospital in Aruba. (San Pedro di Verona).

The first hospital was built in the heart of Oranjestad and since 1977 it is the home of the elderly. The present hospital opened in 1977 and was named after Aruba’s first medical doctor Dr. H.E. Oduber. Before the hospital opened its doors, Dr. Oduber treated his patients at his home. (Quinta del Carmen in Bubali) The building still exists and has been restored to its original state by a local architect who still lives there.

Given the history of the island, there is a great deal of Dutch influence in the organization and execution of the Health Care in Aruba. The small-scale nature of the island has been conducive to the central position of the hospital regarding Aruba’s medical care. In 2006 the hospital celebrated its 30-year existence on its present location.[12]

Pre-MD program

The five year MD program is designed to cater to high school graduates intending to obtain a MD degree. This requires additional 4 semesters to complete the Premedical Program. Students study to fulfill the 90 semester hour requirement in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Math. Once these 4 semesters are successfully completed, students move on to complete the Basic Science portion of the MD program which leads into clinical rotations in the U.S.

MD program

The four year MD program is for those students who have already completed 90 credit hours of Biology, chemistry, Physics, English and Math. in the college or University. Bachelor degree is given preference.

Campus organizations

There is an active student government that organizes many events throughout the school calendar. In addition, students at ASUM hold various affiliations to medical fraternities and organizations
