The soundboard prank call craze began when fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger's films created soundboards, featuring sound bites of his film dialogue. An unknown prank caller took to using these soundboards to call individuals assuming the guise of Detective John Kimble, his iconic character from the feature film Kindergarten Cop.

Soon, soundboards of other celebrities and characters were built and used for prank calling, notably Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Chris Tucker, Borat Sagdiyev, Duke Nukem, George W. Bush, Dr. Phil, Robert de Niro, Jack Black, Barack Obama, Mr. Rogers, Judge Judy, Biff Tannen and Animated TV show characters such as Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson.
Starting with a number of individuals independently pranking Gateway and then Microsoft, there has been a general trend towards calling companies in the computer industry and general technology industries as well as harassing various other unassuming customer service help lines.

Victims
After the success of the celebrity soundboards, new "Victim Soundboards" started appearing on the internet, featuring victims from various celebrity prank calls. These boards made it easier for the pranker to prank someone, without risking the victim recognizing the voice. Sometimes, the victim would be called by their own voice, however, many times, they do not recognise it as their own and begin to swear at themselves. Another variation on this is the victim of a victim where sound clips from a victim soundboard call are used to create another soundboard. This process can keep going for a period of time, and can be used as an example of the domino effect. Some of the victims have gathered a considerable fanbase, most notably: Frank Garrett (Duncan Construction), Tom Adkins (A&S roofing), Angry Black Guy, Satanic Racist, Philly Thug, Springfield Pervert, Epic Crazy Lady (also known as The Pissed-off Waitress), Epic Crazy Lady's Husband, Jesus Lady, and Chinaman. Other vicitm soundboards exist but are less commonly used.

Techniques
Pranksters generally call a potential victim multiple times to increasingly provoke an irate reaction for entertainment purposes and in hopes that these reactions will produce a new victim soundboard though frequently this is not the case. It is not uncommon for prank callers to combine two celebrity and/or victim soundboards into one series of pranks for added humor. In most cases, after the pranking has been completed, the prank caller will post it online, either with just audio or as a video for viewing on social networking or video portal services. With the advent of Skype there have been many prank calls made using the service as it allows callers a higher level of anonymity.
