Tirot Sing (known as U Tirot Sing "U" being a masculine article in Khasi language) was king of Khadsawphra Syiemship of Meghalaya, India. He was a freedom fighter who fought against the British during the early freedom struggle period, during which struggle he was also martyred on 17th July 1835.[1]
Anglo-Khasi War and Martyrdom
The British already had gained control over the Brahmaputra valley after concluding the treaty of Yandabu in 1826. They now wanted to construct a strategic road through the Khasi Hills that would connect this to the earlier gained Surma valley which was occupied in 1765. The political agent of the British, David Scott approached U Tirot Sing, the king of Khadsawphra Syiemship to ask permission for this project through his kingdom. After a session of his Durbar (court) that ran for two days and two nights, the Durbar agreed to David Scott's proposals. However, when news came that the British were reinforcing forces in Assam, U Tirot Sing convened a Durbar again and passed orders for the British to evacuate Nongkhlaw. The British paid no heed [2], and the Khasis attacked the British garrison on the 2nd of April, 1829 [3]. Most of the British soldiers were killed and this started the Anglo-Khasi war. irot Sing was finally captured by the British and deported to Dhaka where he finally died on the 17th of July 1835. His death anniversary is commemorated every year in Meghalaya.
