Additionally, Wikipedia has established a series of guidelines, under the heading "notability", providing guidance on what topics are and what are not suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. In esssence, the notability guidelines asks whether the wider world has recognized a topic by publishing substantive material about it such that it is "notable". (This is covered in more detail at the next step of this wizard.)

Is the subject already covered?

Wikipedia has 6,865,815 articles covering almost every subject imaginable. The subject you're thinking of may already be covered under an alternate spelling, capitalisation, or transliteration; or simply under an alternative name or expression. To avoid duplicating effort needlessly, make sure you've searched thoroughly for alternate page titles the subject might be covered under. (If you find your subject is already covered under another page title, your proposed page title might usefully be redirected there - see Wikipedia:Redirect or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk).

If you haven't already done so, search below for alternate titles under which your subject might be covered already, then come back to this page.

Does the subject meet policies and guidelines for inclusion?

Did you know?

There is a large group of volunteers that monitors new pages added to Wikipedia; pages that aren't encyclopedic enough may be "speedily deleted". If you don't want that to happen to your new article, follow this wizard carefully - and write good encyclopedic content.

Even if your proposed subject isn't covered already, not everything is suitable for this encyclopedia. The Wikipedia community has three interrelating core content policies you are recommended to read in this regard, and a fourth policy providing a listing of various things Wikipedia is not for:

(Hover your cursor over the links below for nutshell explanations)

Additionally, Wikipedia has established a series of guidelines, under the heading "notability", providing guidance on what topics are and what are not suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. In esssence, the notability guidelines asks whether the wider world has recognized a topic by publishing substantive material about it such that it is "notable". (This is covered in more detail at the next step of this wizard.) Do not submit articles that are about:
  • you, someone you know, or your company. (Why?)
  • a local band, unless it has significant recognition.
  • a word in the dictionary (these can be submitted to our sister dictionary project, Wiktionary) unless you can write an encyclopedic article about the word.
  • personal vendettas or campaigns.
They will likely be deleted.
