Josep Lluís Mateo (Architect)

Barcelona-born (1949) Josep Lluís Mateo graduated in Architecture in 1974 from the ETSAB and gained his doctorate (cum laude) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 1994.

Mateo’s practice is based in Barcelona, and he is currently involved in a number of local and international projects such as the new Film Theatre of Catalonia in Barcelona, the new headquarters for PGGM Pension Fund Company in Zeist, Holland and the office building on the former site of Renault factories in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, among others.

With each of his projects, Mateo seeks to connect the practice of construction with research and development in both intellectual and programmatic terms. He works in the area between the sphere of ideas and the physical world of reality. . Recent work

The new head office of the Bundesbank in Chemnitz, Germany (First Prize, international competition) is the result of an intense conceptual process of design that met with excellent international acclaim, as did the Barcelona International Convention Centre (First Prize, international public competition) and the 5-star hotel and office block for the Forum 2004, all in Barcelona. In the same period, he developed the new branch image and layout for BancSabadell in Spain, and was responsible for the renovation of the bank’s historical head office in Sabadell (First Prize, invited competition). Deserving of particular mention are works such as the remodelling of the entrance to BancSabadell’s Torre Diagonal in Barcelona and projects such as the Sant Jordi Hall of Residence for Barcelona University (First Prize, national public competition), Largo da Devesa park in Castelo Branco (Portugal) and the office building for WTC Almeda Park in Cornellà, Barcelona (First Prize, invited competition).

Currently under construction are: - The new Film Theatre of Catalonia in Barcelona (2005-2010. First Prize, national invited competition) - The new headquarters for PGGM Pension Fund Company in Zeist, Holland (2002-2010. First Prize, international invited competition) - The office building on the former site of Renault factories in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris (2006-2010. First Prize, invited competition)

At the planning stage, after winning the corresponding national competitions, are, among others: - Draga-Sibenik Complex, Croatia (First Prize, invited competition, 2009). - Renovation of El Ninot central market in Barcelona (First Prize, national public competition, 2008). - Dr Josep Trueta General Hospital in Girona, Spain (First Prize, invited competition, 2006). - Women’s prison in St. Llorenç d’Hortons, Barcelona (First Prize, invited competition, 2005). - Apartment building in Valencia for the Sociopolis Project (shown at New York’s MoMA as part of the exhibition “Spain: On Site”) - Remodelling of the riverfront in Bayonne, France (First Prize, invited competition, 2006).

Exhibitions and Prizes

The practice’s work has been exhibited on numerous occasions thanks to its international influence. New York’s MoMA devoted a space in the exhibition “Spain: On Site” to its apartment building in Valencia for the Sociopolis Project.

Individual exhibitions include those at Ras Gallery (Barcelona, 2009), Architekturgalerie Aedes (Berlin, 2004), Architekturzentrum Wien (Vienna, 1998), Col•legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (Barcelona, 1998), Galerie Fragner (Prague, 1998), Galerie Aedes (Berlin, 1994), Architekturgalerie Luzern (Luzern, 1992) and Architekturgalerie Munich (Munich, 1991).


The work of Josep Lluís Mateo has been awarded many prizes, including: - Top International Purpose-Built Venue 2008, First Prize. Best International Convention Centre category. Organized by C&IT magazine, London. Project: CCIB-Barcelona International Convention Centre - 2008 Archizinc Award, First Prize. Collective Housing category. Project: Sant Jordi Students’ Hall of Residence, Barcelona - European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2005, Runner-up. Project: CCIB- Barcelona International Convention Centre - 15th Award of Grupo Dragados de Arquitectura and the CEOE Foundation 2001, First Prize. Project: 26 Housing Units in Borneo Docks, Amsterdam, Holland - 1991 Spanish Architecture Biennial in Santander, among the best Spanish architecture projects of the ‘80s. Project: Development of the medieval town of Ullastret in Girona, Spain - 1991 ITALSTAT Award for Young European Architects Academic collaborations and teaching

Josep Lluís Mateo has been Professor of the Architecture Department at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich (ETH-Z) since 2002. He has also taught and lectured at numerous institutions around the world, including Princeton, Columbia University in New York, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, ABK Stuttgart, UP8 Paris, OAF Oslo and ITESM Mexico. He was Visiting Scholar at the Jean P. Getty Center in Los Angeles from 1991 to 1992. Josep Lluís Mateo is President since 2009 of the Board of Directors of the Barcelona Institute of Architecture

He has been a member of a number of juries and expert committees, including the Quality Committee of Barcelona City Council (2000-2008), and for prizes such as the European Landscape Award and the Thyssen Award

Publications

Josep Lluís Mateo was editor-in-chief of the magazine Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme from 1981 to 1990. During this period, the magazine received the following awards: ACCA, Laus, Barcelona City Awards and the International Union of Architects (UIA).
