Garowe ([Garoowe] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help), Arabic: غاروي) is the capital city of the Puntland administrative region of Somalia. It is located in the Nugaal region, and is the seat of the regional parliament, the presidential palace and government ministries.

Overview

A residential area in Garowe.

With a population of 33,686 inhabitants,[1] Garowe is the third largest city in Puntland after Bosaso and Gaalkacyo. It is located in the geographical center of the region.

Garowe is transversed by the north-south Somali highway, which connects major cities in the northern part of the country with cities in the south. The presence of the highway has allowed for an economic boom to take place,[citation needed] which has had a rejuvenating effect on Garowe's population, in the process transforming it from a small rural town to a small to medium-sized city.

The city is home to many Somalis from the Harti confederation of Darod clans, especially the Majeerteen Ciise Mahamoud And Cumar Mahamoud.

Garowe hosts several schools Faroole school, Dugsiga Hoose Darwiish and one major hospital. Numerous news agencies and radio stations are also based here, including Garowe Online and Radio Garowe. In addition, Garowe is home to Puntland State University.
