The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet is a website that provides free access to information on Australian Indigenous health. [1] [2] It contributes to improving the health of Indigenous Australians by making available readily useable, evidence-based knowledge to inform policy, practice, research, and teaching. [3]
The HealthInfoNet "draws together a wide range of information and resources in relation to Indigenous health in Australia into an easily accessible format. It is a field that’s otherwise challenging to find information in, as so much is in the grey literature rather than in refereed journals." Congrave [4]
History
The HealthInfoNet was established in September 1997 as the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Clearinghouse. [5] It developed into a more comprehensive web-based resource for knowledge about Indigenous health and was renamed the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet in 2000 to reflect this broader purpose [6] In March 2009, the HealthInfoNet website was redeveloped to improve the navigation and the structure of the web pages so as to make the contents more accessible. [7] [8] [9]
Core funding for the HealthInfoNet is provided by the Australian Australian Department of Health and Ageing’s Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) through Edith Cowan University. [10] Dr Wooldridge, the then Federal Health Minister, said at the launch of the HealthInfoNet as an Indigenous health knowledge resource “the Federal Government was delighted to continue to provide funding to the HealthInfoNet, to develop and maintain the website as a part of improving the health of indigenous and other Australian's.” [11]
Target audience
The HealthInfoNet defines its target audience broadly as all people working, studying or interested in Australian Indigenous health.[12]
Two groups of the Australian Indigenous health workforce are particularly catered for in the sections Indigenous Health Workers [13] and Indigenous environmental health practitioners.
Governance
The work of HealthInfoNet is guided by a national Advisory Board of 11 members who are prominent in the field of Australian Indigenous health. [14] The HealthInfoNet also has a national network of honorary consultants who have expertise in various areas of Indigenous health. [15]
The resource
The resource provides quality, up-to-date information about Australian Indigenous health, which is readily accessible and freely available. [16] The information is provided through knowledge translation, dissemination of relevant knowledge, facilitation of information exchange, internet and related training, and internet site development aids. [17] [18]
The website provides:
- A comprehensive overview of Indigenous health (Overview of Australian Indigenous health status)
- a searchable list of publications on Indigenous health (Australian Indigenous HealthBibliography)
- a publically available e-journal (Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin)
- collated information in the form of topic-specific reviews or summaries
- reports and theses
- technical and medical glossaries
- practical resources (Health promotion resources and practice resources)
- noticeboards (Job advertisements and conference notices)
- a guestbook to leave comments and feedback
The HealthInfoNet also supports a number of yarning places (online networks also known as 'communities of practice') that enable people interested in Australian Indigenous health to share information, knowledge and experience [19] [20] about specific health topics [21].
