The story of ''Azure Dreams'' on the Game Boy is nearly identical to the PlayStation version, though without relationship building (the player does get close to one character, but with no bearing on the game as a whole). It begins in the desert town of Monsbaiya as Koh, a boy, comes of age and can now climb the Tower of Monstrosity. On his first adventure therein he meets Kewne, a small blue dragon who claims to have known Guy, Koh's father and the greatest monster tamer of all. Koh searches for Guy, collecting and hatching eggs, battling monsters, and unraveling the Tower's secrets. After the first playthrough, the player can replay the game to reach a second ending.

Azure Dreams is a 1999 Game Boy Color port of the PlayStation game, Azure Dreams.

Story

The story of Azure Dreams on the Game Boy is nearly identical to the PlayStation version, though without relationship building (the player does get close to one character, but with no bearing on the game as a whole).

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to its predecessor and other turn based dungeon crawlers. Each action constitutes a turn, with the player and each opposing monster acting once per turn. Certain status effects and abilities will affect the number of actions allowed per turn. Fighting alongside the player are one or two 'familiars', monsters he or she has tamed.

Items are scattered throughout the floors of the Tower. These range from swords, shields, and wands to magic balls and monster eggs.

There are several ways to leave the Tower. If Koh is defeated, he will awaken at home having lost every item brought into the Tower, with the exception of familiars. Two items will teleport Koh and his items out of the Tower, the Olimseed and the Wind Gem.

It is possible to beautify the town of Monsbaiya through various means, such as giving money to Koh's childhood friend, Nico, who will then turn portions of the desert town into a grand garden.

The Tower

The tower consists of 31 above-ground floors and 99 subterranean levels. Each floor, with few exceptions, is randomly generated. As the player progresses in either direction, the difficulty of monsters increases.

Entering the tower will reset the player's level to 1, making his items and familiars key in progressing to the more difficult floors. Only 5 items may be carried when entering the tower.

Monsters

The game largely revolves around the taming, leveling, and fusing of Tower monsters. Monsters can be bought at some expense in the town's stores, but are more often found as eggs within the Tower. Eggs may be hatched at home or in the Tower, though any monster hatched inside the Tower will depart after Koh leaves. The player can fuse two familiars together into a single familiar. This can unlock new abilities or create a monster available only through fusing.

Monsters and familiars, like the player, possess typical role-playing attributes, including an important MP attribute. All actions taken, including simple movement, consume a set amount of MP. When MP reaches zero, a familiar becomes inactive. Monsters also belong to one of four classes: Wind, Water, Fire, and an "Anti" class effective against the other three. The first three classes are weak against one class and strong against another.
