Kourosh Zolani

Kourosh Zolani is an Iranian-American composer, soloist, and inventor. He is known for designing and playing the world's only[according to whom?] playable chromatic santur.[1][verification needed]

Personal life

Kourosh Zolani was raised in the small village of Sangsar, Iran, where music was considered a cultural taboo.[why?][2] Despite this, Zolani developed a passion for musical expression at an early age,[when?] and began to secretly learn to play the santur at age 14. It quickly became apparent[according to whom?] that he was a prodigy.[according to whom?][citation needed]

Kourosh has participated as a santur player in many[who?] composers’ works, including in David Arkenstone's Atlantis album,[3] which received a Grammy Award nomination for the Best New Age Album of the Year.[4] These awards were held on February 13, 2005 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.[5]

In November 2009, Zolani released a collection of his original work, entitled Memoirs of Sangesar.[6]. His work has been featured on the radio programs such as the Jon Lewis Show [7] [8] in Perth, Australia, and is now streaming on various Internet radio sessions, including: Mog [9], Napster [10], Blip.fm[11], iSound [12], Yahoo music [13], and Last.fm[14]

He has received a number of awards for his work.[example needed][citation needed] In 2004, his album, Peaceful Planet was awarded the Best Solo Instrumental Album of the Year[15] in the Just Plain Folks Music Organization's International Contest, the world's largest independent music awards according to the organization's website.[better source needed][16] He has also received The Elaine Weissman Los Angeles Treasures Award from The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and The California Traditional Music Society.[17]
